Second Pure Land [Teachings’] General Essential
[(The) Great Amitā Sūtra Says…]
[The] Great Amitā Sūtra says, one day, [as] Śākya[muni] Buddha’s countenance [was] extraordinary, [his] attendant Ānanda [thought it was] extraordinary and asked [about] it.
[The] Buddha said, ‘Excellent! That you [have] asked [about], surpasses making of offerings [to] one world’s Voice-Hearers, [those by] Conditions Awakened, and giving [to] all heavenly [and] human people, down to [all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings]. Although reaching accumulated kalpas, even [with a] hundred ten million times [more, it] cannot [be] comparable. Why is that [so]? With [this], all heavenly [beings], emperors, people, and even [all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings], all because [of] that you [have] asked, [will] then attain [the] path of deliverance [and] liberation.’
With this contemplating that, [this] is when Śākya[muni] Buddha first desired [to] speak of Amitā[bha] Buddha, [with] him retained in [his] mind, then showing in [his] face, [it is] already different from ordinary days. Thus, Amitā[bha] Buddha, therefore [with] that connecting [to] all Buddhas, [is] certainly already extraordinary, moreover [with] that connecting [to] all sentient beings?
And [when] Ānanda asked, then telling this, then saying, ‘All heavenly [beings], emperors, people, down to [all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings], all because [of] that you [have] asked, [will] then attain [the] path of deliverance [and] liberation.’ [This] is from all heavenly [beings], down to [all] wriggling [beings], all together in [the] three realms within, thus not exited [from] rebirth. Therefore, [for] those yet [to] for [themselves] attain deliverance [and] liberation, Amitā[bha] Buddha’s great vows’ power, [is] without those not delivered, thus [for] all, delivering [and] liberating them.
Contemplating his first given rise vow’s verse, [it] says, ‘When I reach accomplishment [of] Buddhahood, [my] name’s sound [will be] surpassing [in the] ten directions. Human [and] heavenly [beings who] joyfully attain hearing [of it, will] together come [to be] born [in] my land. Hell-beings, ghosts [and] animals, likewise [will be] born within my land.’ [As this] is then [with] all those in [the] three realms’ six paths, reborn within, without those not delivered, [this] can [be] known.
Therefore, this sūtra says, ‘Amitā[bha] Buddha [is] presently in [the] Western Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, also [in the] ten directions’ worlds teaching [and] transforming [an] inexhaustible number [of] all heavenly [and] human people, down to [all] kinds of flitting, flying [and] wriggling [beings, with] none [of] those not attaining deliverance [and] liberation.’ [The] flitting [and] flying, [are] called very small flying insects too. [The] wriggling, [are] called very small maggots too.
If [for] these, [the] Buddha still transforms [and] delivers, moreover of people? [Thus] does he therefore widely deliver sentient beings, without having [an] exhaustible limit. And [of] people [with] one thought taking refuge, thereupon born [in] his land, [this is] without [that] sufficient [for] doubt.
