[15] Explanation Of Aspirations For Majestic Conduct When Advancing And Retreating From Dwellings (Of The Great Right And Vast Buddha’s Flower Adornment Sūtra’s Pure Practices’ Chapter)《大方广佛华严经·净行品》明住处进止威仪时愿

[15] [VS4] [Fourth: Explanation (Of) Aspirations (For) Majestic Conduct When Advancing (And) Retreating (From) Dwellings]

[V033]

[When] leaving crossed legs [in the] lotus posture’s seat,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] contemplate all practice methods,
[to] all return [to be] dispersed [and] ceased.

[Note: All practice methods are those of the Dharma, which are reminded to be dispersed when uncrossing the legs, and cease when getting ready to stand, although true practice should always be in the mind, even if without formal postures.]

[V034]

When lowering [a] foot [to] stand,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings’
minds [to] attain liberation,
[to] peacefully stand [on the] immovable.

[Note: The immovable represents the immovable ground and/or the eternal nature of Buddhahood.]

[V035]

If [with] raising of [a] foot,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] exit [from the] ocean [of] birth [and] death,
[to be] complete [with] all good dharmas.

[Note: The ocean of birth and death is the cycle of rebirth.]

[V036]

When wearing [an] under skirt,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to be] dressed [with] all good roots,
[to be] complete [with moral] shame.

[Note: Good roots are foundations for spiritual growth, which are free from greed, hatred and delusion.]

[V037]

[When] tidying clothes [and] tying belt,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] check [and] restrain [with their] good roots,
not causing [them to be] scattered [and] lost.

[Note: Good roots are foundations for spiritual growth, which are free from greed, hatred and delusion.]

[V038]

If wearing upper garments,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] obtain excellent good roots,
[to] reach [the] Dharma’s other shore.

[Note: Good roots are foundations for spiritual growth, which are free from greed, hatred and delusion. The other shore is Buddhahood or Pure Land, through which swiftest Buddhahood is guaranteed.]

[V039]

[When] wearing [the] saṅghāṭī,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] enter [the] foremost position,
[to] attain [the] immovable Dharma.

[Note: The saṅghāṭī is the outer long monastic robe. The foremost position is Buddhahood. The Dharma is immovable as it is eternally still, thus representing Buddhahood.]

[V040]

[With a] hand holding [a] willow branch,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] all attain [the] wonderful Dharma,
[for] ultimate purity.

[Note: The willow branch is for brushing teeth. Ultimate purity is attained by realising Buddhahood.]

[V041]

When chewing [a] willow branch,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to have] their minds harmoniously purified,
[by] biting [off] all afflictions.

[Note: Chewing a willow branch is for toothbrushing action. Afflictions arise from the defilements of greed, hatred and delusion.]

[V042]

When defecating [and] urinating,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] abandon greed, hatred [and] delusion,
avoid [and] remove transgressive dharmas.

[Note: Transgressive dharmas are evils created with body, speech and mind.]

[V043]

[With toileting] matters finished approaching water,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] world-transcending Dharma within,
swiftly then advance.

[Note: World-transcending Dharma are teachings for liberation.]

[V044]

[When] washing to cleanse [the] body’s dirt,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to be] pure, harmonious, gentle [and] agreeable,
ultimately without defilements.

[Note: To be agreeable here is to be one with that good and pure.]

[V045]

With water washing [the] palms,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] attain pure hands,
[for] receiving [and] upholding [the] Buddhadharma.

[Note: Pure hands are with pure motivations and actions for receiving the Buddha’s Dharma teachings for complete purification.]

[V046]

With water washing [the] face,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] attain pure Dharma doors,
[to] forever [be] without defilements.

[Note: Pure Dharma doors are practice methods for total purification. Defilements are from greed, hatred and delusion.]
