[12] Explanation Of Aspirations For Bodhisattvas When At Home (Of The Great Right And Vast Buddha’s Flower Adornment Sūtra’s Pure Practices’ Chapter)《

[12] [VS1] [First: Explanation (Of) Aspirations (For) Bodhisattvas When At Home]

Disciple [of the] Buddha,

[V001]

[When] Bodhisattvas [are] at home,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] know [their] families [to be with the] nature [of] emptiness,
[to] avoid their constraints [and] compulsions.

[Note: Due to constantly changing nature of family and its members in this life, and from life to life, we should learn to love all more equanimously, with less attachment to just a few loved ones.]

[V002]

[With] filiality serving [one’s] father [and] mother,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to be] good [at] attending to [the] Buddhas,
[by] protecting [and] nurturing all.

[Note: As all other beings are our parents in past and future lives too, we should be filial to all beings to repay their kindness. As all Buddhas care for all beings, to help all beings is to serve the Buddhas too, as this is what they wish.]

[V003]

[With] wife [and] children gathering,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to see] enemies [and] relatives [to be] equal,
[to] forever depart [from] greedy attachment.

[Note: As all beings are our family members in past and future lives too, including present enemies, there should be renunciation of attachment and aversion to anyone, while caring equanimously for all.]

[V004]

If attaining [the] five desires,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] pull out [and] remove desires’ arrows,
[for] ultimate tranquillity.

[Note: The five desires are for wealth, sexual (sensual) pleasures, fame (status), food and sleep. True tranquillity is attained without the five desires, instead of with their short-lived fulfilment.]

[V005]

[With] music [and] dance [at] gatherings,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to be] with [the] Dharma [for] personal entertainment,
[and] understand [that the] performances [are] not real.

[Note: The Dharma offers true entertainment as it is the most interesting and offers true lasting enjoyment. Worldly entertainment only offers fleeting and thus unsubstantial joy. Thus, the performers and their skills are not lasting, while the true skill is to understand and benefit one and all with the Dharma.]

[V006]

If in [a] palace [or] house,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] enter in sacred grounds,
[to] forever eliminate defiled desires.

[Note: This refers to any other building too. To enter sacred grounds refers to ascending noble grounds of enlightenment too, including by entering Pure Land. Defiled desires are those arising from greed, hatred and delusion.]

[V007]

When wearing [a] necklace,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] renounce all false decorations,
[and] reach [the] place [of] truth.

[Note: False decorations are from worldly vanity and are not lasting. Truth is reached by realising the Dharma, which is to be adorned with the Dharma instead.]

[V008]

[When] rising up [in] towering pavilions,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] rise [in the] Right Dharma’s tower,
[to] completely see all.

[Note: Rising in the Right Dharma’s tower is by increasing in wisdom. To completely see all is to have comprehensive realisation of the truth of everything.]

[V009]

If [there] is that given,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to be with] all able [to] renounce,
[with their] minds without love’s attachment.

[Note: All to be renounced is that non-essential for Buddhahood, that might be useful if given to others too.]

[V010]

[When] assemblies gather,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] renounce all assembled dharmas,
[to] accomplish all[-knowing] wisdom.

[Note: All assembled dharmas will disassemble when causes and conditions change. All-knowing wisdom is the omniscience that all Buddhas realised.]

[V011]

If in adversities [and] difficulties,
[there] should [be] aspiration [for] sentient beings,
[to] accord [with their] wishes [with] ease,
[with] that practised without obstacles.

[Note: These wishes should be good and pure, as aligned with the Dharma.]
