三士偈
Verses [On The] Three Scopes
下士发增上心者，
信愿行具必西生，
先为佛国中天人，
发菩提心成菩萨。
Those [of the] low scope [as initial disciples, who] gave rise [to] Increase [In Improvement’s] Mind, [with] Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice complete, [are] definitely born [in the] Western [Pure Land], first becoming [the] Buddha Land’s heavenly [and] human [beings] within, [then] giving rise [to the] Bodhi Mind [i.e. Bodhicitta] [to] accomplish [as] Bodhisattvas.
中士发出离心者，
信愿行具必西生，
先为佛国中声闻，
发菩提心成菩萨。
Those [of the] middle scope [as intermediate disciples, who] gave rise [to] Renunciation’s Mind, [with] Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice complete, [are] definitely born [in the] Western [Pure Land], first becoming [the] Buddha Land’s Voice-Hearers within, [then] giving rise [to the] Bodhi Mind [to] accomplish [as] Bodhisattvas.
上士发菩提心者，
信愿行具必西生，
先为佛国中菩萨，
圆满修行成等觉。
Those [of the] high scope [as advanced disciples, who] gave rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, [with] Faith, Aspiration [and] Practice complete, [are] definitely born [in the] Western [Pure Land], first becoming [the] Buddha Land’s Bodhisattvas within, [then] perfecting [and] completing cultivation [of] practice [to] accomplish Equal Awakening.
