问:彻悟人还须往生否?
Question: [Do the] thoroughly awakened [but yet to be Buddhas] still need [to be] reborn [in Pure Land or] not?
答:《普贤愿王》,导归极乐,初地至十地,皆云不离念佛。
Answer: ‘Samantabhadra [Bodhisattva’s] King [Of Ten Great] Vows‘《普贤菩萨十大愿王》, guide [all to take] refuge [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, [as even Bodhisattvas from the] First Ground to [the] Tenth Ground, [are] all said [to] not depart [from] mindfulness [of] Buddha.
《怡山发愿》:「承事十方诸佛,无有疲劳。」
[Verses Of Chán Master] ‘Yíshān’s Vows’《怡山发愿文》[says, ‘to] serve [the] ten directions’ all Buddhas, without having weariness.’
《百丈清规》:课诵、送亡等事,无不指归净土。
[In Chán Master] ‘Bǎizhàng’s Rules [For] Purity’, [for] teaching [and] recitation, sending off [the] deceased [and] other matters, none [do] not point [to] refuge [in] Pure Land.
故天如云:「若果悟道,净土之生,万牛莫挽。」
Thus [did Chán Master] Tiānrú say, ‘If [having] awakened [to the] path, of Pure Land’s birth, [even] ten thousand bulls cannot pull [one away from this Aspiration].’
云栖云:「悟后不愿往生,敢保老兄未悟。」
‘Yúnqī[‘s Collected Pure Land Sayings’《云栖净土汇语》says, ‘After awakening, [if] not aspiring [to be] reborn [in Pure Land, I] dare [to] guarantee [that this] old chap [has] yet [to be] awakened.’
是知凡言不必生净土者,皆是增上慢人,非真入菩萨位者也。
Indeed, know [that] all those [who] say [there is] no need [to be] born [in] Pure Land, are all [with] increased conceit, [i.e. who have yet to realise excellent virtues but think they have], not truly those [who have] entered Bodhisattvahood.
Note: If even the greatest Bodhisattvas like Samantabhadra, who is thoroughly awakened see great worth in personally reaching Pure Land, and guiding all beings to reach it too, who are we, the thoroughly unawakened, to even imagine we should not reach Pure Land, to be completely awakened?
