Āmítuófó’s Mudras When Receiving Beings
第十八十念皆生我国愿
设我得佛,十方众生,
至心信乐,欲生我国,乃至十念,
若不生者,不取正觉。
唯除五逆,诽谤正法。
Eighteenth Vow [Of] All Born [In] My Land [With] Ten [Mindful] Thoughts
If I attain Buddhahood, [if the] ten directions’ sentient beings, [with] utmost sincere minds [of] joyful faith, desire birth [in] my land, even with ten [mindful] thoughts, should not [be] born [there, I shall] not attain right awakening. Only excluded [are those who with the] Five Heinous [Transgressions, who] slandered [the] right Dharma.

下品下生
佛告阿难,及韦提希:「下品下生者,或有众生,作不善业,五逆十恶,具诸不善,
Low Grade’s Low Birth
The Buddha told Ānanda and Vaidehī, ‘[Of the] Low Grade’s Low Birth, if [there] are sentient beings, [who] created non-good [i.e. evil] karma,
[the] [Departure Cause 1] Five Heinous [Transgressions (五逆罪)] [i.e.
(1) killing of Father (杀父),
(2) killing of Mother (杀母),
(3) killing of Arhat (杀阿罗汉),
(4) causing Buddha to bleed (初佛身血) and
(5) creating schism in Saṃgha (破和合僧)],
[and the] [Departure Cause 2] Ten Evil [Karmas (十恶业) of
(1) killing (杀生),
(2) stealing (偷盗),
(3) sexual misconduct (邪淫),
(4) lying (妄语),
(5) slander (两舌),
(6) harsh speech (恶口),
(7) useless speech (绮语),
(8) covetousness (贪欲),
(9) hatred (嗔恚) and
(10) false views (邪见)],
complete [with] all [that is] not good,
如此愚人,以恶业故,应堕恶道,经历多劫,受苦无穷。
these such foolish persons, with evil karma thus, [Possible Effect 1] should fall [into the] evil paths, passing through many kalpas, receiving suffering without end.
如此愚人,临命终时,遇善知识,种种安慰,为说妙法,教令念佛,彼人苦逼,不遑念佛,善友告言:‘汝若不能念彼佛者,应称无量寿佛,如是至心,令声不绝,具足十念,称南无阿弥陀佛。’
[Supporting Condition 1] These such foolish persons, when approaching life’s end, [if] meeting good-knowing friends, [who offer] all kinds [of] consolations,
[Supporting Condition 2] for [them] speaking [the] wonderful Dharma, teaching [to] enable [them to be] mindful [of] [Amitā(bha)] Buddha, that person,
[Supporting Condition 3] [if by] suffering compelled, [or with] no time [to be] mindful [of] Buddha, [a] good friend says [these] words, “You, if not able [to be] mindful [of] that Buddha, should recite [the name of] Immeasurable Life Buddha [i.e. Amitāyus Buddha], thus [with a] sincere mind, enabling [the] sound [to] not [be] interrupted, completing ten thoughts, [of] reciting ‘Námó Āmítuófó’.”
称佛名故,所念念中,除八十亿劫生死之罪。命终之时,见金莲华,犹如日轮,住其人前。如一念顷,即得往生极乐世界。
[Departure Effect 1] Reciting [the] Buddha’s name thus, within every thought, eradicates eighty koṭis [of] kalpas [of] births’ [and] deaths’ transgressions.
[Departure Effect 2] When life [is] ending, [they will] see [a] golden lotus flower, just like [the] sun, abiding before these persons. As if [in] one thought moment, [they] immediately attain rebirth [in the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss.
于莲华中,满十二大劫,莲华方开。观世音,大势至,以大悲音声,为其广说诸法实相,除灭罪法。闻已欢喜,应时即发菩提之心。
[Rebirth Effect 1] Within the lotus flowers, completing twelve great kalpas [i.e. 12 days in Sahā World’s time], [the] lotus flower then blossoms. Contemplator [Of The] World’s Sounds [i.e. Guānshìyīn] Bodhisattva [and] Great Power Arrived [i.e. Dàshìzhì] Bodhisattva, with great compassionate voices, [will] for them extensively speak [of] all dharmas’ [i.e. phenomena] true nature, eradicating [their] transgressions [of the] Dharma.
[Rebirth Effect 2] Hearing [this] then, [with] joy, at once, [they] immediately give rise [to the] mind of Bodhi [Bodhicitta].
是名下品下生者。是名下辈生想,名第十六观。」
[These] are named [as] those [of the] Low Grade’s Low Birth. [These, with those of the Low Grade’s Middle and Higher Births] are named [as] perception [of the three] Low Grades [Of] Birth, named [as the] Sixteenth Contemplation.’
