【一】：我未出家时，于不仁不义，无礼无智的事，即他人导之为，而我自羞惭愧耻，纤毫必不肯为。所以者何？
[Part 1]: When I [have] yet [to] leave [the] household [life], of matters [that] are not benevolent, not righteous, without propriety [and] without wisdom, even if [with] other persons’ guiding of [what to] do, yet I naturally [had] shame [and] repentance, [in the] least definitely not willing [to] do [them]. Why [is] that [so]?
[Note 1: The first cause of having a strong conscience, is natural Buddha-nature.]
良由吾前世亲近好人，八识田中领纳得好言语，所以今生自然见恶则耻，不肯去做。
Truly, because [of] me, [in my] past lives [being] close [to] virtuous persons, [with my] eighth consciousness within, receiving [their] virtuous words, therefore [in this] present life naturally, [when] seeing evil, then [feeling] shame, not [being] willing [to] go do [them].
[Note 2: The second cause of having a strong conscience, is nurtured nature, from the influence of past lives’ good-knowing spiritual friends, which is registered subconsciously, with its tendencies carried over to this life. However, note that this is not enough now, as we are still not enlightened. This is why we should aspire to reach Pure Land, where swift enlightenment is guaranteed.]
你们要着实亲近好人，当早晚发愿之时，当愿世世生生亲近善知识。
You must truly get close to virtuous people, [and you] should [in] morning [and] night, when giving rise [to] Aspiration, then aspire [to], life [after] life, get close to good-knowing [friends].
[Note 3: There should be getting close to those who are virtuous, to study and practise the Dharma together, as soon as possible, and as often as possible. There should also be aspiring (i.e. vowing) to reach Pure Land, where the ideal good-knowing friends (who are enlightened) will be met and connected to, once and for all.]
