[24] Pure Land’s Wonderful Birds And Their Wonderful Sounds
己二、约耳根声尘明受用
F2: Restricted [To] Ear Root’s Sound Dust’s Explanation [Of Those] Received [And] Used Benefits
【解】: 以此方耳根最利，故别就法音广明。
[Explanation]: With this direction’s [beings’] ear root most sharp, therefore specially with regard to Dharma sounds extensively explaining.
其实极乐摄法界机，五尘一一圆妙，出生一切法门也。
In fact, [the Land Of] Ultimate Bliss gathers [the] Dharma realm’s capacities, [with the] Five Dusts [i.e. of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches], each [and every] one interpenetrating [and] wonderful, giving rise [to] all Dharma Doors.
又二：初、别明，二、总结。

壬初、鸟音法利
I1: Birds’ Sounds’ Dharma Benefits
【经】：复次舍利弗，彼国常有种种奇妙杂色之鸟，白鹤、孔雀、鹦鹉、舍利、迦陵频伽、共命之鸟。是诸众鸟，昼夜六时，出和雅音。其音演畅五根、五力、七菩提分、八圣道分，如是等法。其土众生，闻是音已，皆悉念佛、念法、念僧。
[Sūtra]: Furthermore, Śāriputra, that land constantly has all kinds [of] rare [and] wonderful birds of various colours: White Cranes, Peacocks, Parrots, Śāris, Kalaviṅkas, [and] Birds That Share Life. All these many birds, day [and] night, [during the] six periods, produce harmonious [and] elegant sounds. Their sounds clearly expound [the] Five Roots, Five Powers, Seven Bodhi Factors, Eight Noble Path Factors, such [and] other Dharma [teachings]. That land’s sentient beings, [having] heard these sounds already, [will] all [be] mindful [of the] Buddha, mindful [of the] Dharma, [and] mindful [of the] Saṃgha.
【解】:「种种奇妙杂色」，言多且美也，下略出六种。
[Explanation]: [Those] ‘all kinds [of] rare [and] wonderful birds of various colours’, speak [of] many [and] moreover beautiful, [with the] below outlining six kinds.
「舍利」，旧云「鹙鹭」，琦禅师云是「春莺」，或然。
‘Śāris’, [in the] past [were] called ‘Orioles’. [With] Chán Master [Fàn]qí [i.e. 梵琦] calling these ‘Spring Orioles’, [they are] perhaps thus.
「迦陵频伽」，此云「妙音」，未出壳时，音超众鸟。
[Of] ‘Kalaviṅkas’, these [are] called ‘Wonderful Sounds’, when yet [to] emerge [from their] shells, [already with] sounds surpassing all birds’.
「共命」，一身两头，识别报同。
[Birds That] ‘Share Life’, [have] one body [with] two heads, [and] consciousnesses different [with] rewards same.
此二种，西域雪山等处有之。
[Of] these two kinds [of birds, the] Western Regions’ snow mountains [and] other places have them.
皆寄此间爱赏者言其似而已。
All [these] rely on those [in] this place loved [and] appreciated, speaking [of] them [as the] similar only.
「六时」出音，则知净土不以鸟栖为夜。
[In the] ‘six periods’ producing sounds, then knowing [that the] Pure Land [is] not with birds roosting because of night.
良以莲华托生之身，本无昏睡，不假夜卧也。
[This is] truly because those bodies [from] lotus flowers entrusted born, [are] originally without drowsiness [and] sleep, not needing nightly lying [down].
