[13] Record Of Zhāng Zhōngkuí’s Rebirth 张钟馗往生记

张钟馗，唐朝人，居住在长安，以杀鸡为业。

From the Táng Dynasty, living in Cháng‘ān, Zhāng Zhōngkuí’s was with killing of chickens as his livelihood.

临命终时，看见一位穿粉红衣服的人赶着鸡群来到他面前，并且大声叫说：‘啄！啄！’

When approaching the end of life, due to arrival of his negative karmic retribution, he saw a pink-dressed person driving a flock of chickens before him, and to the flock of chickens loudly said, ‘Peck! Peck!’

群鸡就往张钟馗的身上啄，使得他的双眼血流不止，痛不可忍。

They immediately came forward to peck his body and eyes, leading them to bleed endlessly, with unbearable pain.

当时有位僧人宏道，见到此情景，于是替他设立佛像，并劝他念佛。

Seeing this, a monastic named Venerable Hóngdào set up a Buddha image, [burnt incense, recited Āmítuófó’s name] and encouraged him to be mindful of [the] Buddha [by reciting Āmítuófó‘s name, simultaneously leading him to wholeheartedly focus on doing so]. 张钟馗依教奉行持念佛名后，忽然觉得香气满室，鸡群也跟着散去，随即就端坐而往生。(佛祖统纪) 

After Zhāng Zhōngkuí followed the teaching to do so, all of a sudden, fragrance filled the room, as the flock of chickens scattered and left, immediately following which, Zhāng Zhōngkuí, while sitting upright, departed to be reborn in Āmítuófó’s Pure Land. (Chronicles Of Buddhas And Patriarchs)
