[37] What Is The Essential Meaning Of The Section On Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva’s Perfect Penetration With Mindfulness Of Buddha?《

[In the] Śūraṅgama Sūtra, Great Power Arrived Bodhisattva said, ‘Gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession, [to] attain samādhi, this is [the] foremost.’ [The] emphasis [is] on listening.

[The] ‘six roots’ [are] thus [the] eye, ear, nose, tongue, body [and] mind. [The] mind [is] thus [the] consciousness root. [The] mouth [is] thus [the] tongue root. Listening [is] thus [the] ear root.

[With the] mind mindful, [the] mouth reciting, [and the] ears listening, these three roots [at] once gathered, [the] eyes also will not [to the] East look [and to the] West gaze, [the] nose also will not smell other smells, [and the] body also [will] not dare [to be] lax [and] lazy, thus named [as] ‘gathering all six roots’.

[Note: If there is no verbal recitation (称念); only having silent (mental) recitation (默念), the physical mouth will not be functioning, thus only gathering the two roots (of the mind and ears), to gather the other four roots. As the tongue root (舌根) is usually used for tasting, it can also be said to be not functioning when reciting, which does not involve tasting that recited.]

‘Gathering all six roots’ then mindful, [is] naturally without defiled, mixed [and] false thoughts, thus named [as] ‘pure mindfulness’. ‘Pure mindfulness’ must frequently [be with] one [thought] after another unceasing, thus named [as] ‘pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’. [When] able [to have] ‘pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’, gradually over time, then attains Mindfulness [Of] Buddha’s Samādhi [i.e. Sānmèi: meditative concentration].

This ‘gathering all six roots, [with] pure mindfulness [in] continuous succession’, is [the] foremost wonderful method of attaining samādhi. Thus saying, ‘[to] attain samādhi, this is [the] foremost.’ ‘Samādhi’ [is] thus [the] other name of sānmèi.

Like this mindful [of] it, definitely having [the] one day of [having] ‘pure mindfulness’ constantly retained, completely without false thoughts.
