Spirit Peak’s Great Master Ǒuyì’s Selection [Of The] Pure Land [Tradition’s] Ten Essentials’ Foremost [Treatise]
述曰:「佛法之妙,莫要于净土。
[It is] stated [that], ‘[On] wonders of [the] Buddha’s Dharma [Doors, there is] none [more] essential to rely on [than the] Pure Land [Dharma Door].
净土之妙,莫要于持名。
[On] wonders of [the] Pure Land [Dharma Door, there is] none [more] essential to rely on [than] upholding [Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛)] name.
持名之妙,莫要于《小本阿弥陀经》。
[On] wonders of upholding [Āmítuófó’s] name, [there is] none [more] essential to rely on [than the] Smaller Version [Of The] Amitā[bha] Sūtra.
《小本》之妙,莫要于灵峰《要解》。」
[On] wonders of [the] Smaller Version, [there is] none [more] essential to rely on [than the] Spirit Peak’s Essential Explanation [Of The Sūtra In Which The Buddha Speaks Of Amitā(bha) Buddha]《佛说阿弥陀经要解》.’
倘未读《要解》,或读未精详,或精详未贯彻,便谓于《小本》无不知,无不信,无不悟入,可乎?
If yet [to] study [the] Essential Explanation, perhaps [with] studying yet [to be] fine [and] detailed, or [with the] fine [and] detailed yet [to be] carried through, then saying of [the] Smaller Version, [with] nothing not known, nothing not believed, [and] nothing not awakened [and] entered, [is this] possible?
既于本经有未尽,一行三昧,如何修行?既未善持名,净土玄关,如何优入?既未阶净信净愿,十方三世佛祖大道,如何荷担?然则《要解》之有关于十方三世佛祖大道也甚矣!
Since relying on this sūtra, having [that] yet [to be] completed, [of the] One Practice Samādhi, how [to] cultivate [it]? Since yet [to] well uphold [Āmítuófó’s] name, [of the] Pure Land’s profound gate, how [to have] excellent entry? Since yet [to] ascend [to] pure Faith [and] pure Aspiration, [of the] ten directions’ three periods’ Buddhas [and] Patriarchs’ great path, how [to] bear [it]? However then, that [the] ‘Essential Explanation’ has, [which is] related to [the] ten directions’ three periods’ Buddhas [and] Patriarchs’ great path [is] also more than [enough]!
今定《十要》,以《要解》为上首,厥义有三。
Now selecting [The Pure Land Tradition’s] Ten Essentials 《净土十要》, with [the] Essential Explanation as [the] foremost [treatise], then has three meanings.
一祖佛经。以《小本》为净土诸经之最要故。
[1] First, [it is about the] Patriarchs [and] Buddha’s sūtras. [As they are] with [the] Smaller Version as [the] most essential [of] all Pure Land sūtras thus.
二重持名。以末法修行,总以持名为行本故。
[2] Second, [it] emphasises upholding [Āmítuófó’s] name. [As it is] with [this as the] Dharma-Ending [Age’s] cultivation, overall with upholding [Āmítuófó’s] name as [the] practice fundamental thus.
三立本经之大宗。以今解精彻确正,堪为《要中之要》故。
[3] Third, [it] establishes [the] great principles of this sūtra. [As it is] with present explanations [of its] essence thorough [and] accurate, [it is] worthy [of] being [The] Essential Of Essentials thus.
读《十要》者,请以《要解》为主,以余九为伴。能令邪解莫入,能令意见不容,能令心宗圆明,能令美善双尽。
[Of] those studying [the] Ten Essentials, please [be] with [the] Essential Explanation as [the] main [treatise, and] with [the] other nine as companion [treatises. It is] able [to] cause evil explanations [to] not enter, able [to] cause [wrong] objections [to] not [be] tolerated, able [to] cause [the] mind’s essence [to be] completely understood, [and] able [to] cause [the] beautiful [and] good [to be] complete.
夫然后不愧为真学佛者。夫然后不自误误人。夫然后必生净土。夫然后可学一切佛法。夫然后知十方三世佛祖之大道,举不外乎此矣。
Those afterwards [will] not [be] ashamed, as those truly learning [from the] Buddha. Those afterwards [will] not [be] personally misled [and] mislead others. Those afterwards [will] definitely [be] born [in the] Pure Land. Those afterwards can learn all [the] Buddha’s Dharma [Doors]. Those afterwards [can] know [the] great path of [the] ten directions’ three periods’ Buddhas [and] Patriarchs, [who] raise nothing else but this.
