先自除恶，后教人除
First Personally Eliminate Evils, After That Teaching People To Eliminate Them
菩萨摩诃萨应护一切众生之心。若不护者，则不能调一切众生。
Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas should protect [the] minds of all sentient beings. If [there are] those not protecting [them, they are] then not able [to] tame all sentient beings.
菩萨亦应拥护自身。若不护身，亦不能得调伏众生。
Bodhisattvas likewise should protect themselves. If not protecting [them]selves, [they are] likewise not able [to] attain taming [of] sentient beings.
菩萨不为贪身命财、护身命财，皆为调伏诸众生故。
Bodhisattvas [should] not, for greed [of] personal life [and] wealth, protect personal life [and] wealth, [with] all for taming all sentient beings thus.
菩萨摩诃萨先自除恶，后教人除。若不自除，能教他除，无有是处！
Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas [should] first personally eliminate evils, after [that] teaching people [to] eliminate [them]. If not personally eliminating [them, to be] able [to] teach others [to] eliminate [them, this] is without possibility!
是故菩萨先应自施、持戒、知足、勤行精进，然后化人。
Therefore, Bodhisattvas first should personally give, uphold Precepts, know contentment, [and] persevere [in] practices diligently, after that transforming people.
菩萨若不自行法行，则不能得教化众生。
Bodhisattvas, if not personally practising Dharma practices, [they are] then not able [to] attain teaching [and] transforming [of] sentient beings.
