[38] Immeasurable Life Sūtra’s Thirty-Eighth Chapter’s Summary & Explanation《无量寿经》第三十八品:小结与解释

Immeasurable Life Sūtra’s Thirty-Eighth Chapter’s Summary & Explanation

[1] As the Buddha’s teachings concluded, four auspicious signs (瑞相) appeared, for all in the great assembly (大众) confirming them, so as to give rise to faith (证信).

This three-thousandfold great-thousandfold (galactic) world (三千大千世界) had six kinds of shaking (六种震动), in resonance with the great impact of the truths (真理), as propagated for the sake of all –

[i] with the East rising and the West sinking (东涌西没),
[ii] with the West rising and the East sinking (西涌东没),
[iii] with the South rising and the North sinking (南涌北没),
[iv] with the North rising and the South sinking (北涌南没),
[v] with the sides rising and the middle sinking (边涌中没), and
[vi] with the middle rising and the sides sinking (中涌边没).

Likewise, there should be such thorough resonance upon our mind grounds (心地), that awaken us to our Buddha-nature (佛性), so as to be mindful of the Buddha (念佛), to further awaken it with his blessings.

[2] Great light universally illuminated the ten directions’ lands (i.e. everywhere) (大光普照十方国土). This light of blessings can be regarded as the immeasurable light (无量光) of Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛), whose light also includes all other Buddhas’ lights (佛光). This light serves to awaken and bless all with affinity to see it, to pay attention to these teachings. Likewise, when we practise mindfulness of Buddha sincerely, the Buddha’s light can be seen too.

[3] A hundred thousand kinds of music then naturally played (百千音乐,自然而作). These are offerings (供养) by many Bodhisattvas (菩萨) and heavenly beings (天人) to honour the Buddha and all in the great assembly paying attention to his teachings. Likewise, should we have great reverence when learning that taught.

[4] Immeasurable wonderful flowers one after another then fell (无量妙华,芬芬而降). These are also offerings, to praise the Buddha and that taught. The best offerings to the Buddhas however, is to diligently practise and propagate that learnt.

With the appearance of the signs above, the world to that extent, was ‘similar’ to the Pure Land for a while.

[5] All in the great assembly,

[i] the next Buddha in our world Maitreya Bodhisattva (弥勒菩萨),
[ii] and the ten directions‘ all Bodhisattva assemblies who came (十方来诸菩萨众),
[iii] the elder Ānanda, all great Voice-Hearers (长老阿难,诸大声闻),
[iv] and all (else) in the great assembly (一切大众),

were joyful (欢喜). Likewise should we be joyful, as we have ‘heard’ these precious and skilful teachings too, that are the easiest to practise, for the swiftest of progress towards Buddhahood (via reaching of Pure Land).
