如何消尽业障
[227] How [To] Completely Eliminate Karmic Obstacles

念佛虽能灭宿业,然须生大惭愧,生大怖畏,转众生之损人利己心,行菩萨之普利众生行。

Although mindfulness [of] Buddha [is] able [to] eliminate past [evil] karma, [there is] however need [to] give rise [to] great repentance, give rise [to] great fear [of karmic retribution], transform sentient beings’ mind [of] harming people [for] benefitting oneself, [to] practice [of] Bodhisattva practices [for] universally benefitting sentient beings.

[Note 1: Repentance (忏悔) can be expressed by reciting the Repentance Verse (忏悔文):

我昔所造诸恶业,
皆由无始贪瞋痴,
从身语意之所生,
一切我今皆忏悔。

From my past, those created all evil karmas,
all due to beginningless greed, anger and ignorance,
from body, speech and mind, of those arisen,
for all I now all repent.]

[Note 2: Great fear of karmic retribution arises from great faith in karmic cause and effect (深信因果), thus repenting sincerely for past misdeeds, and resolving sincerely to not have future misdeeds.]

则若宿业,若现业,皆仗此大菩提心中之佛号光明,为之消灭净尽也。

Then, if [with] past [evil] karma, or present [evil] karma, [with] all relying [on] this great Bodhi Mind [i.e. Bodhicitta] within, [with] the Buddha’s name’s [i.e. Āmítuófó: 阿弥陀佛] bright light, [they will] because of [this be] eliminated, [to be] completely gone.

[Note 3: To have ‘practice of Bodhisattva practices (菩萨行) for universally benefitting sentient beings’ is to have and express the Bodhi Mind (菩提心). With it as aspiration, even the practice of mindfulness of Buddha becomes a Bodhisattva practice, as this is done not only for self-benefits, but for benefitting all other beings too. With such great mindfulness of Buddha, his light of great blessings will be connected to firmly, to thoroughly eliminate evil karma present.]
