唐真州僧自觉
[12] Táng [Dynasty’s] Zhēnzhōu’s Monastic Zìjué
自觉发愿：「愿因大悲观音，接见阿弥陀佛。」
Zìjué gave rise [to this] Aspiration, ‘May [I], because [of the] Great Compassionate Contemplator [Of] Sounds, receive [me to] see Amitā[bha] Buddha.’
于是化钱，铸大悲像四十九尺，造寺居之。既成，祝愿。
Thereupon, collecting money, [to] cast [the] Great Compassionate [One’s] image, forty-nine chǐs [in height], building [a] monastery [and] residing there. [With it] already complete, praying [and] vowing [before it].
[Note: As one chǐ is 0.33 metre, this is 16.3 metres.]
其夜三更，忽有金色祥光二道，阿弥陀佛自光中乘云而下，观音、势至左右随之。
[On] that night’s third watch [i.e. 11 a.m.], [there] was suddenly gold-coloured auspicious light [with] two rays. Amitā[bha] Buddha from [the] lights within rode clouds and descended, [with] Contemplator [Of] Sounds [Bodhisattva and] Power Arrived [Bodhisattva on his] left [and] right following him.
佛垂金臂，按觉首曰：「守愿勿悛，利物为先。宝池生处，孰不如愿。」
[The] Buddha lowered [his] golden arm, pressed Jué’s head [and] said, ‘Guard [your] Aspiration [to reach Pure Land and do] not change [it, with] benefiting sentient beings as [your] foremost [task. Of your] treasure pond’s birthplace, how [can it be] not as aspired?’
后十一年七月望夕，见一人云间现半身，若毗沙门天王，俯谓觉曰：「安养之期，于斯至矣。」乃于大悲前跏趺化去。
Eleven years later [i.e. 795 C.E.], [in the] seventh month’s Wàngxī [i.e. fifteenth] day, seen [was] a person within [the] clouds, appearing [with] half [of his] body, like Vaiśravaṇa Heavenly King, looking down [and] saying [to] Jué, ‘[The] date of [reaching the Land Of] Nurturing Peace, [has] now arrived.’ Then, before [the] Great Compassionate [One’s image], seated [in the] lotus posture, [he] departed [to] go.
