戒禅师后身东坡
[2] Chán Master Jiè [In His] Later Life [Becoming] Dōngpō
五祖戒禅师乃东坡前身，应验不一。以前世修行，故今生聪明过人。
[That] Wǔzǔ[shān Monastery’s (五祖山寺)] Chán Master [Shī]jiè [师戒] [was] then [Sū] Dōngpō [苏东坡] [in his] previous life, [this is with] confirming proof [that is] not singular. [In his] past life [having] cultivated practice, thus [in this] present life [with] intelligence surpassing people.
以三毒气习未除，故今生多缘诗语，意外受窜谪。此亦大误也。
With [the] three poisons’ habitual [forces, from attachment, aversion and delusion] yet [to be] eliminated, thus [in this] present life, [having] much affinity [with] poetic words, accidentally receive demotion [and] exile. This [is] also [a] big mistake.
若前世为僧，参禅兼修西方，则必径生净土，成就大福大慧，何至生此世界，多受苦恼哉？
If [in his] past life as [a] monastic, [with] Chán contemplation, simultaneously [with] cultivation [to reach the] Western [Pure Land], then definitely [with] direct birth [in the] Pure Land, [to] accomplis great blessings [and] great wisdom, how [can he] arrive [to be] born [in] this world, [to] receive much suffering [and] afflictions?
闻东坡南行，唯带阿弥陀佛一轴。人问其故，答云：「此轼生西方公据也。」若果如是，则东坡至此，方为得计。亦以宿植善根，明达过人，方悟此理故也。
[It is] heard [that] Dōngpō [to the] South travelled, only carrying a [painted] scroll [of] Amitā[bha] Buddha. [When] people asked [about] its purpose, [he] answered, ‘This [is Sū] Shì’s [苏轼] public proof [of] birth [in the] Western [Pure Land].’ If truly thus, then [with] Dōngpō arriving [at] this [land], then [is this] as attaining [success in his] plan [for reaching Buddhahood. This is] also with [his] past life’s planted good roots, [with] understanding thorough [that] surpasses people, then awakening [to] this principle thus.
闻鲁直前世为妇人，诵《法华经》，以诵经功德，故今世聪明有官职。此随业缘来者也。若生西方，岂如是而已哉？
[Also] heard [is that Huáng] Lǔzhí [(黄鲁直), or Huáng Tíngjiān (黄庭坚) in his] past life was [a] woman, [who] recited [the Wonderful] Dharma [Lotus] Flower Sūtra《妙法莲华经》, with reciting [of the] sūtra’s meritorious virtues, thus [in this] present life [with] intelligence, having [an] official position. These [are] that according [to his] karmic conditions coming. If born [in the] Western [Pure Land], how [can advantages be] thus only?
