Verses For Giving Rise To Aspiration For Birth In The Western Pure Land
净土宗八祖莲池大师著
Written by the Pure Land Tradition’s Eight Patriarch Great Master Liánchí
稽首西方安乐国，
qǐshǒu xīfāng ānlèguó
接引众生大导师。
jiēyǐn zhòngshēng dàdǎoshī
我今发愿愿往生，
wǒjīn fāyuàn yuàn wǎngshēng
惟愿慈悲哀摄受。[一拜]
wéiyuàn cíbēi āi shèshòu.
I prostrate to the Western Land Of Peace And Bliss’ great guiding teacher who guides and receives all sentient beings. I now give rise to the aspiration, vowing to be reborn there, only wishing to, by your loving-kindness, compassion and sympathy, be gathered and received. [1 bow]
弟子___【某甲】众等，
dìzǐ _ zhòngděng,
普为四恩三有，法界众生，
pǔwèi sìēn sānyǒu, fǎjiè zhòngshēng
求于诸佛，一乘无上菩提道故，
qiúyú zhūfó, yīchéng wúshàng pútídào gù
专心持念阿弥陀佛万德洪名，期生净土。[一拜]
zhuānxīn chíniàn Āmítuófó wàndé hóngmíng, qīshēng jìngtǔ
I, disciple, ________ [name] and all others, universally, for the four kindnesses, the three existences, and the dharma realm’s sentient beings, seek all Buddhas’ one vehicle’s unsurpassable Bodhi path thus, wholeheartedly upholding mindfulness of Amitā[bha] Buddha’s great name [Āmítuófó] of ten thousand virtues, longing for birth in his Pure Land. [1 bow]
又以业重福轻，障深慧浅，
yòuyǐ yèzhòng fúqīng, zhàngshēn huìqiǎn
染心易炽，净德难成。
rǎnxīn yìchì, jìngdé nánchéng
今于佛前，翘勤五体，
jīnyú fóqián, qiàoqín wǔtǐ
披沥一心，投诚忏悔。[一拜]
pīlì yīxīn, tóuchéng chànhuǐ
Moreover, with negative karma heavy and blessings light, obstacles deep and wisdom shallow, and defiled mind easily ablaze, pure virtues are difficult to accomplish. Now before the Buddha, earnestly hoping, prostrating with five limbs, baring and dripping with wholeheartedness, surrendering with sincerity to repent. [1 bow]
我及众生，旷劫至今，
wǒjí zhòngshēng, kuàngjié zhìjīn
迷本净心，纵贪嗔痴，
míběn jìngxīn, zòng tānchēnchī
染秽三业，无量无边；
rǎnhuì sānyè, wúliàng wúbiān
所作罪垢，无量无边；
suǒzuò zuìgòu, wúliàng wúbiān
所结冤业，愿悉消灭。[一拜]
suǒjié yuānyè, yuànxī xiāomiè
I, with all sentient beings, from distant kalpas until now, have been lost from our original pure minds, having indulged in greed, hatred and delusion, that stain and defile the three karmas, immeasurably and boundlessly. Of created defiled misgivings, they are immeasurable and boundless. Of formed karma of enmity, may it all be eradicated. [1 bow]
从于今日，立深誓愿，
cóngyú jīnrì, lì shēn shìyuàn
远离恶法，誓不更造；
yuǎnlí èfǎ, shìbù gēngzào
勤修圣道，誓不退惰；
qínxiū shèngdào, shìbù tuìduò
誓成正觉，誓度众生。[一拜]
shìchéng zhèngjué, shìdù zhòngshēng
From this day, I establish profoundly earnest vows, to far away depart from evil dharmas, vowing to never again create them, to diligently cultivate the noble path, vowing to never backslide with laziness, vowing to accomplish right awakening, and vowing to deliver sentient beings. [1 bow]
阿弥陀佛，以慈悲愿力，
Āmítuófó, yǐ cíbēi yuànlì
当证知我，
dāng zhèngzhī wǒ
当哀悯我，
dāng āimǐn wǒ
当加被我。[一拜]
dāng jiābèi wǒ
May Amitā[bha] Buddha, with his power of vows, with loving-kindness and compassion, now confirm and know of me, now empathise with me, now bless and protect me. [1 bow]
愿禅观之中，梦寐之际，
yuàn chánguān zhīzhōng, mèngmèi zhījì
得见阿弥陀佛金色之身，
déjiàn Āmítuófó jīnsè zhīshēn
得历阿弥陀佛宝严之土，
délì Āmítuófó bǎoyán zhītǔ
得蒙阿弥陀佛甘露灌顶，
déméng Āmítuófó gānlù guàndǐng
May I, within dhyāna contemplation, or while asleep dreaming, attain sight of Amitā[bha] Buddha’s gold-coloured body, attain experience of Amitā[bha] Buddha’s treasure-adorned land, receive Amitā[bha] Buddha’s ambrosia anointing my crown,
光明照身，手摩我头，衣覆我体。
guāngmíng zhàoshēn, shǒumó wǒtóu, yīfù wǒtǐ
使我宿障自除，善根增长，
shǐwǒ sùzhàng zìchú, shàngēn zēngzhǎng
疾空烦恼，顿破无明；
jíkōng fánnǎo, dùnpò wúmíng
圆觉妙心，廓然开悟，
yuánjué miàoxīn, kuòrán kāiwù
寂光真境，常得现前。[一拜]
jìguāng zhēnjìng, chángdé xiànqián
his bright light shining upon my body, his hand touching my head, and his robes covering my body, causing my past obstacles to be self-eradicated, good roots to grow, swiftly emptying afflictions, immediately destroying ignorance. May perfect enlightenment’s wonderful mind, greatly awaken, to the still light’s true realm, that always appears before me. [1 bow]
至于临欲命终，预知时至，
zhìyú línyù mìngzhōng, yùzhī shízhì
身无一切病苦厄难，
shēn wú yīqiè bìngkǔ ènàn
心无一切贪恋迷惑。
xīn wú yīqiè tānliàn míhuò
诸根悦豫，正念分明，
zhūgēn yuèyù, zhèngniàn fēnmíng
舍报安详，如入禅定。[一拜]
shěbào ānxiáng, rúrù chándìng
As for when approaching wish for the end of life, may I know in advance the time of departure, with the body without all sicknesses, suffering, calamities and difficulties, the mind without all greedy attachments and confused delusions. May all sense roots be joyous, with right mindfulness clear, as I renounce this retribution body with peaceful composure, as if entering meditative concentration. [1 bow]
阿弥陀佛，与观音势至，诸圣贤众，
Āmítuófó, yǔ Guānyīn Shìzhì, zhū shèngxián zhòng
放光接引，垂手提携。
fàngguāng jiēyǐn, chuíshǒu tíxié
楼阁幢幡，异香天乐，
lóugé chuángfān, yìxiāng tiānyuè
西方圣境，昭示目前。
xīfāng shèngjìng, zhāoshì mùqián
令诸众生，见者闻者，
lìngzhū zhòngshēng, jiànzhě wénzhě
欢喜赞叹，发菩提心。[一拜]
huānxǐ zàntàn, fāpútíxīn
May Amitā[bha] Buddha, with Guānyīn [Avalokiteśvara] Bodhisattva, Shìzhì [Mahāsthāmaprāpta] Bodhisattva, all sages and virtuous ones of the assembly, emit light to receive and guide, with lowered hands lead me by hand. With towering pavilions, banners, extraordinary fragrance and heavenly music, may the Western Pure Land’s sacred environment, manifest clearly before my eyes, which enable all sentient beings, who see and hear them, to joyfully and greatly praise, giving rise to Bodhicitta. [1 bow]
我于尔时，乘金刚台，
wǒyú ěrshí, chéng jīngāng tái
随从佛后，如弹指顷，生极乐国。
suícóng fó hòu, rú tánzhǐ qǐng, shēng jílèguó
七宝池内，胜莲花中，
qībǎochí nèi, shèng liánhuā zhōng
花开见佛，见诸菩萨，
huākāi jiànfó, jiànzhū púsà
闻妙法音，获无生忍。[一拜]
wén miào fǎyīn, huò wúshēngrěn
May I, then, ride the vajra throne, follow behind the Buddha, and in a fingersnap’s moment, be born in the Land Of Ultimate Bliss. In a pond with seven treasures, from a supreme lotus flower within, as the flower blossoms, I will see the Buddha, see all Bodhisattvas, hear the wonderful sounds of the Dharma, and attain the Forbearance Of Non-Birth. [1 bow]
于须臾间，承事诸佛，亲蒙授记。
yú xūyú jiān, chéngshì zhūfó, qīnméng shòujì
得受记已，三身四智，
dé shòujì yǐ, sānshēn sìzhì
五眼六通，无量百千，
wǔyǎn liùtōng, wúliàng bǎiqiān
陀罗尼门，一切功德，皆悉成就。[一拜]
tuóluóní mén, yīqiè gōngdé, jiēxī chéngjiù
Within an instant, I will serve all Buddhas, who personally confer prediction for Buddhahood. Having attained conferred prediction already, with three bodies, four wisdoms, five eyes, six penetrations, and immeasurable hundreds of thousands of dhāraṇī doors, all meritorious virtues, will all be accomplished. [1 bow]
然后不违安养，回入娑婆，
ránhòu bùwéi ānyǎng, huírù suōpó
分身无数，遍十方刹。
fēnshēn wúshù, biàn shífāng chà
以不可思议自在神力，种种方便，
yǐ bùkěsīyì zìzài shénlì, zhǒngzhǒng fāngbiàn
度脱众生，咸令离染，
dùtuō zhòngshēng, xián lìng lírǎn
还得净心，同生西方，入不退地。[一拜]
huándé jìngxīn, tóngshēng xīfāng, rù bùtuìdì
After that, never separate from the Land Of Peaceful Cultivation, returning to enter the Sahā World, with divided bodies that are innumerable, pervading the ten directions’ lands. With inconceivable ease of supernormal powers, and all kinds of expedient means, to deliver and liberate sentient beings, all are enabled to depart from defilements, regain their pure minds, and be together born in the Western Pure Land, to enter the ground of non-retrogression. [1 bow]
如此大愿，世界无尽，
rúcǐ dàyuàn, shìjiè wújìn
众生无尽，业及烦恼，
zhòngshēng wújìn, yè jí fánnǎo
一切无尽，我愿无尽。
yīqiè wújìn, wǒyuàn wújìn
Of such great vows, for worlds inexhaustible, sentient beings inexhaustible, karma and afflictions, all inexhaustible, my vows will be inexhaustible.
愿今礼佛、发愿、
yuàn jīn lǐfó, fāyuàn
修持功德，回施有情。
xiūchí gōngdé, huíshī yǒuqíng
四恩总报，三有齐资，
sìēn zǒngbào, sānyǒu qízī
法界众生，同圆种智。[三拜]
fǎjiè zhòngshēng, tóngyuán zhǒngzhì
May I now, prostrating to the Buddha, having made these vows, cultivate meritorious virtues, to be returned, given to all sentient beings. May the four kindnesses be totally repaid, the three existences be together helped, and the dharma realm’s sentient beings, together attain perfect and complete wisdom. [3 bows]
