[9] [The] Ninth Doubt
[为何净土辽远，女人，根缺及二乘仍能生？]
[Why Is It That With The Pure Land Far Away, Women, Those Lacking Roots And The Two Vehicles Are Still Able To Be Born There?]
问：极乐国土，去此娑婆世界，尚有十万亿佛土。[1] 如此辽远，凡夫岂能即到？
Question: [The] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, from this Sahā World, still is [a] hundred thousand koṭis [of] Buddha lands [away]. [1] Like this [so] far away, how [are] ordinary beings able [to] immediately arrive [there]?
又闻 [2] 女人、[3] 根缺，及 [4] 二乘人，皆不得往生，信乎？
Also heard [is that] [2] women, [3] [those with] roots lacking, and [4] [the] Two Vehicles’ persons, all cannot attain rebirth. [Is this] believable?
答：[1] 道远难去者，形也。一念可往者，心也。念佛者生彼国土，只在此心，非挟此形骸以往也。如人梦游他国，虽在千万里外，一呼便醒，岂因道近易觉，道远难觉耶？
Answer: [1] That [with the] path far [and] difficult [to] go, [is the] form. That [with] one thought [that] can go, [is the] mind. Those mindful [of Āmítuó]fó born [in] that land, only depend [on] this mind, [and do] not grasp this human body [to be] with [it] reborn. Like entering [a] dream travelling [to] other countries, although beyond ten million lǐs, [with] one call then waking up, how can it be that [with the] path near [then] easy [to] awaken, [and with the] path far [then] difficult [to] awaken?
[2] 女人及 [3] 根缺不生者，谓极乐国土，无有女人，及根缺之人也，非谓女人及根缺者不得往生也。
[On] [2] women and [3] those [with] roots lacking not born, [this is] speaking [of the] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, not having women, and those persons [with] roots lacking, not speaking [of] women and those lacking roots not attaining rebirth.
若女人不得往生，则韦提希（阿阇世王之母）与五百侍女，世尊何以授记其悉得往生乎？
If women cannot attain rebirth, then [with] Vaidehī ([the] mother of King Ajātaśatru) and [her] five hundred maids, why [did the] World-Honoured [One] confer [the] prediction [that] all [will] attain rebirth?
《无量寿经》四十八愿中，佛有一愿云：「设我得佛，十方世界一切女人，称我名号，厌恶女身，舍命之后，更受女身者，不取正觉。」
Within [the] Immeasurable Life Sūtra’s forty-eight vows, [the] Buddha has a vow saying, ‘If I attain Buddhahood, [should the] ten directions’ worlds’ all women, [who] recite my name, [and] loathe [their] female bodies, leaving life after, again receive female bodies, [I shall] not obtain Right Awakening.’
女人如此，[3] 根缺可知。且鸲鹆、鹦鹉，尚因念佛而往生（一见《净土文》，一见《法苑珠林》），岂根缺者，反不如异类耶？
[With] women like this, [3] [those with] roots lacking can [be] known [thus too]. Moreover, mynas [and] parrots, still [can], because [of] mindfulness [of Āmítuó]fó, then [be] reborn (One [can be] seen [in Lóngshū’s] Pure Land Text《龙舒净土文》, [and] one [can be] seen [in] Dharma Garden’s Grove [Of] Pearls), how can those [with] roots lacking, instead [be] not as good as [these] different kinds [of beings]?
[4] 至于二乘，乃果位中人，凡夫尚得往生，岂有反摈二乘之理？
[4] As for [the] Two Vehicles, thus [are] persons within fruit positions. [If] ordinary beings still [can] attain rebirth, how can there be reason of excluding [the] Two Vehicles instead?
《阿弥陀经》云：「彼佛有无量无边声闻弟子，皆阿罗汉。」将谓独非二乘耶？故谓生彼国者，无二乘之执心，则可。谓二乘不生，生彼国者，即无二乘，则不可。
[The] Amitā[bha] Sūtra says, ‘That Buddha has immeasurable [and] boundless Voice-Hearer disciples, all [of whom are] Arhats.’ Thus, saying those born [in] that land, [are] without [the] attachment mind of [the] Two Vehicles, then [is this] acceptable. Saying [the] Two Vehicles [are] not [able to be] born, [to be] those born [in] that land, then [being] without [the] Two Vehicles, then [is this] not acceptable.
