第八疑
[8] [The] Eighth Doubt
[何得十念生净土？]
[How To Attain Rebirth In Pure Land With Ten Thoughts?]
问：凡夫宿世今生，广造无量恶业，临终十念，云何遂得往生？
Question: [As] ordinary beings [from] past lives [to] this life, widely created immeasurable evil karmas, [when] approaching [life’s] end [with] ten thoughts [of Āmítuófó], how [can they] thereupon attain rebirth [in his Pure Land]?
答：今世造恶，临终十念往生者，必其宿世修行，今生不过一念之迷耳。不然，临殁之时，恶缘必至矣，安能反遇善知识，教以念佛乎？即教以念佛，彼安得而听信乎？
Answer: Those [in] this life [having] created karmas, [when] approaching [life’s] end [with] ten thoughts reborn, must [have in] their past lives cultivated, [in] this life only [having the] confusion of one thought. Otherwise, [at the] moment of approaching death, [with] evil conditions [that] will arrive, how can they be able [to] instead meet good-knowing [friends, who] teach [them to] rely on mindfulness [of Āmítuó]fó? Even [if] teaching [them to] rely on mindfulness [of Āmítuó]fó, how can it be [that] those [are able to] then listen [and] believe?
况彼念佛之时，必其幡然觉悟，痛悔前非，大怖切心，万缘齐放，止认西方一条路，更无别处可回头。
Moreover, [at the] moment of those [with] mindfulness [of Āmítuó]fó, they will suddenly realise awakening, [to] thoroughly repent [for their] past mistakes, [with] great fear [and the] urgent mind. [With the] ten thousand conditions altogether put [down], only recognising [the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss’ (极乐世界)] one path, furthermore without other places [that] can turn [them] around.
如此念佛，虽然一句，可当千声。所以《十六观经》云：「念念中灭八十亿劫生死之罪。」果能办着此种精诚，又加以宿生福业，佛来接引，夫亦何疑？
Like this mindful [of Āmítuó]fó, although [it is] one line, [this] can be[come a] thousand recitations. Therefore, [the] Sixteen Contemplations Sūtra says, ‘[From] thought [to] thought within, eliminating eighty koṭis’ kalpas’ transgressions of births [and] deaths.’ If able [to] do [thus], with this kind [of] utmost sincerity, also additionally, with past lives’ blessed karmas, [and the] Buddha coming [to] receive [and] guide, those likewise, [will have] what doubt?
