[10] The Tenth Doubt: How To Attain Birth In Pure Land? 第十疑:如何得生净土?

问:[1] 今欲决定求生西方,未知作何功行,何等发心,得生彼国?

Question: [1] Now desiring [to] definitely seek birth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界)], yet [to] know [with the] doing [of] what meritorious practices, [and] giving rise [to] what kind [of] mind, attains birth [in] that land.

[2] 又世俗之人,皆有妻子,未知不断淫欲,得生彼国否?

[2] Also, of worldly secular people, [as] all have wives, yet [to] know [if] not severing lustful desires, attains birth [in] that land or not.

答:[1] 欲决定生西方者,持名之外,当具 [i] [ii] 二种念力,必得往生。

Answer: [1] [Of] those desiring [to] definitely [be] born [in the] Western [Pure Land], other than upholding [Āmítuófó’s] name, [they] should [be] complete [with] [i] [ii] two kinds [of] mindfulness powers, [to] definitely attain rebirth.

[i] 一者当生厌离浊世之念,[ii] 二者当生欣慕乐邦之念。

[i] First, [there] should [be] giving rise [to the] thought of revulsed renunciation [of this] defiled period’s [world]. [ii] Second, [there] should [be] giving rise [to the] thought of joyful admiration [of that] blissful country.

又当 [iii] 发菩提心,随力作善以回向之,未有不往生者。

Also, [there] should [be] [iii] giving rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, according [to one’s] strength doing good, [with] those dedicated, [with which] yet [to] have, [are] those not reborn [there].

至于 [2] 妻子之缘,在俗亦所不碍,苟能使之共沾法味,断不因之而反种孽根。

As for [the] [2] condition of [having] wives, [those] in secular [life are] also not [by] that obstructed. If able [to] enable them, [to] together receive [the] Dharma’s taste, [it is] absolutely not because [of] this then instead planting evil’s root.

所谓 [i] 厌离浊世者,浊恶世中,动生荆棘。世人只为衣食二字,困苦一生;为名利两途,奔波一世。手忙脚乱,甘为妻子做家奴。

[On that] so-called [i] revulsed renunciation [of this] defiled world, within [this] defiled evil period, [it] arouses [and] gives rise [to] thistles [and] thorns. [The] world’s people [are] only for clothing [and] food, [these] two words, [with] difficulties suffering [for their] whole lives. For fame [and] profits’ two paths, rushing about [for] one lifetime. [With] hands busy [and] legs confused, willingly for [their] wives [and children] being household slaves.

昼思夜梦,总为色身寻烦恼。自想七尺形躯,外面只因一片皮包,所以妄自尊大。若将天眼一观,中间不过满腹屎溺,及脓血恶露而已。

[In] day thinking [and at] night dreaming, always for [the] physical body seeking [with] afflictions. Personally contemplating [this] seven-chǐ form’s body, [it is on the] outside, only because [of] one piece [of] skin wrapping [it], therefore falsely with oneself honoured [and] great. If with [the] heavenly eye once looking, [in the] middle, [it is] only filled with excrement [and] urine, pus, blood and foul fluids [i.e. lochia], that is all.

所以《涅槃经》云:「如是身城,愚痴罗刹,止住其中。」何有智慧者,当乐此身,而谓不当厌离乎?

Therefore, [the Mahāpari]nirvāṇa Sūtra says, ‘Thus [with] this body’s “city”, ignorant rākṣasas, stop [and] abide within it.’ How [can] those [who] have wisdom, [think they] should [have] joy [with] this body, and say [they] should [not have] revulsed renunciation?

所谓 [ii] 欣慕乐邦者,西方之乐,非天宫之可比,不可以言语形容。每日但将经中所言,一一静想,以为吾将来必定到此,则欣慕之念自生,净土之缘自熟。

[On] that so-called [ii] joyful admiration [of the] blissful country, [the] bliss of [the] Western [Pure Land, is] not that [which] heavenly palaces can compare, [and] cannot [be] with words [and] speech described. Every day, only with those [in the] sūtras spoken, [with] each [and every] one [part] quietly contemplated, believing I will [in the] future, definitely reach here, then [will the] thought of joyful admiration naturally arise, [and] conditions of [the] Pure Land naturally [become] familiar.

云何谓 [iii] 发菩提心?《往生论》云:「菩提心者,誓愿成佛之心也。」「誓愿成佛」者,怜悯一切众生轮回六道,受苦无极,是以发心救度,使其超出三界,同至西方极乐国土而后已也。

What [is] called [iii] giving rise [to the] Bodhi Mind? [The] Rebirth Treatise says, ‘That Bodhi Mind [is the] mind of vowing [to] accomplish Buddhahood.’ Those ‘vowing [to] accomplish Buddhahood’, sympathise [with] all sentient beings reborn [in the] six paths, receiving suffering unbound. With this giving rise [to the] mind [to] save [and] deliver, [to] enable them [to] transcend [the] three realms, [and] together arrive [at the] Western [Pure] Land [Of] Ultimate Bliss, then after ending.

念佛之人,若能具此 [i] [ii] 二种念力,又加以 [iii] 发菩提心,仰体如来度人之意。有不决定往生,蒙佛授记者,未之有也。

Of people mindful [of Āmítuó]fó, if able [to be] complete [with] these [i] [ii] two kinds [of] mindfulness powers, also additionally with [iii] giving rise [to the] Bodhi mind, looking upwards [to] realising [the] Thus Come [One’s] intention of delivering people, [on] having those not definitely reborn, [to] receive [the] Buddha’s conferred prediction, [it is] yet [to] have [them].
