[288] The Many And Varied Kinds Of Śarīras

Speaking [of] those ‘śarīras’, [as] connected [to the] Sanskrit language, these [are] called physical bone [relics], also called holy bone [relics].

[They are] thus [by] practitioners’ precepts, concentration [and] wisdom’s powers those formed, not [by] refining [of] essence, vitality [i.e. qì] [and] spirit those formed.

These [are] only externally expressed forms of [the] mind with [the] path uniting, [or the] mind with [the] Buddha uniting.

Not only [from] those [who have] died and [those who were] cremated, [there are] those [whose] bodies’ flesh, bones [and] hair change [to] become śarīras.

[The] ancients had those high monastics taking baths, then obtaining śarīras.

[There] also [was] Xuěyán’s Chán Master [Zǔ]qīn [祖钦] shaving [his] head, whose hair changed [to] become one string [of] śarīras.

[There] also are those wholeheartedly reciting [the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], [from their] mouths within obtaining śarīras.

[There] also were those persons carving ‘Lóngshū’s Pure Land Text’s [printing] boards, [from these] boards within producing śarīras.

[There] also were those embroidering Buddhas, [and] embroidering sūtras, [from] under [their] needles obtaining śarīras.

[There] also was that after death cremated, [having] śarīras innumerable, [with] disciples all obtaining [them. There] was one far-travelling, yet [to] return. When returning [with] devoted worship before [the] image, sighing sorrowfully, thereupon before [the] image, obtaining śarīras.

[On the] day of Chángqìng’s Chán Master Xián’s cremation, [the] sky arose [with] strong wind, [with the] smoke flying thirty [to] forty lǐs [away]. Those places [the] smoke reached, all had śarīras. Thereupon, [with] crowds collecting them, obtaining more than four shís.

[Note: As 1 lǐ (里) is 500 metres, 30 to 40 lǐs is 15 to 20 kilometres. As 1 shí (石) is 10 dòus (斗), which is 150 kilograms, four shís is 600 kilograms.]

[It] should [be] known [that] śarīras, [are] thus [by the] path’s power those formed. Those refining pills [who do] not know why [they arise], falsely guess [that they] are [with] essence, vitality [and] spirit those refined only.

Editor’s respectful note: [On the] next night of Great Master Yìn[guāng’s] [印光大师] cremation, [upon] examination obtained [were] more than [a] hundred pieces [of] five-coloured śarīra gems, [which were] refined [and] round, bright [and] clear, glittering with light.

[There] also were big [and] small śarīra flowers, and blood śarīras, teeth śarīras (thirty-two pieces) [and] others, together [with] more than [a] thousand pieces.

On [the] mountain, monastics [and] laypersons [were with] none not surprised because of [their] rarity.

[There] also [was] Wúxī’s layperson Yuán Décháng, [who upon] examination obtained holy bone [relics] (bone fragments), carrying [and] returning [with them]. Arriving home [and] opening [to] see [them, he] suddenly saw [the] bones within appearing [to] have innumerable śarīras, brilliant [and] dazzling. [Hereby] attaching this, so as to record [for] reverence.
