[241] With Relative Truths Understand The Absolute Truth

If like [in the] Chán Tradition, if only moving upwards [with contemplative investigation] [参究], then [is] one dharma not established, [the] Buddha [is] still without [a] landing place, much less mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)] [to] seek birth [in his] Pure Land? This absolute truth [is] that [with] one destroyed, [then with] all destroyed, so-called [on] true nature’s principles’ ground, not receiving one dust [mote], revealing nature’s essence.

[Note 1: As an example, absolute truth (真谛) aligns with the reality that ‘forms are the same as emptiness’ (色即是空).]

If truly discussing [about] practice, then [is] one dharma not discarded, [with] not working, then not eating, what more mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name to] seek birth [in his] Pure Land? This relative truth [is] that [with] one established, [then with] all established, so-called within Buddhist practice doors, not abandoning one dharma, revealing nature completely.

[Note 2: As an example, relative truths (俗谛) align with the reality that ‘emptiness is the same as forms’ (空即是色).]

If desiring [to] abandon relative truth[s], then speaking [of] absolute truth, then [is it] not absolute truth. Like abandoning [the] four great [elements and] five aggregates, then seeking mind-nature, [with the] body already not existing, [the] mind will [have] where [to] rely on?

[Note 3: Four Great Elements (四大): (i) Earth Great Element (地大) of solidity, (ii) Water Great Element (水大) of fluidity, (iii) Fire Great Element (火大) of (heat) energy, (iv) Wind Great Element (风大) of movement]

[Note 4: Five Aggregates (五蕴): (i) Form (色), (ii) Feelings (受), (iii) Perception (想), (iv) Mental Formation (行), (v) Consciousness (识)]

If then [with] relative truths for understanding absolute truth, thus [is it] truly absolute truth. Like at [the] eye speaking [of] seeing, [and] at [the] ear speaking [of] hearing, [this] is the same as [with the] four great [elements and] five aggregates, then revealing mind-nature.

This follows all previous Patriarchs’ main points of secretly cultivating [the] Pure Land [Dharma Door].
