[240] Not Seeking The Buddha’s Blessings, Illusions Appear And Disappear

Persons cultivating Dhyāna [i.e. meditative] Concentrations (referring [to the] Four Dhyānas [and] Eight Concentrations), and persons contemplating Chán, [are] only with relying on Self-power, not seeking [the] Buddha’s blessings, thus from [their] skills attaining [some] capability, when [the] true [and] false attack each other, often have all kinds [of] states, [with] illusions appearing [and] illusions disappearing.

[Note: The Four Dhyānas’ Concentrations (四禅定) are the

(i) First Dhyāna’s Concentration (初禅定),
(ii) Second Dhyāna’s Concentration (二禅定),
(iii) Third Dhyāna’s Concentration (三禅定) and
(iv) Fourth Dhyāna’s Concentration (四禅定).

The Eight Concentrations (八定) are the above with

(v) Space Boundless’ Place’s Concentration (空无边处定),
(vi) Consciousness Boundless’ Place’s Concentration (识无边处定),
(vii) Without That Existing’s Place’s Concentration (无所有处定) and
(viii) Non-Perception And Not Non-Perception’s Place’s Concentration

For example, like when overcast [and] raining, going [to be] clear, [through] thick clouds breaking [through a] crack, suddenly seeing [the] sun’s light. [With] mental unclarity in between, [are] transformations unexpected.

[With] all states, [if] not [as] those truly complete [with the] path’s eye, [they] not able [to be] differentiated [and] recognised. If wrongly recognised [as] news [of attainment], then [is there] possession [by] demons [to] go mad, [as] those not able [to be] cured.

Persons mindful [of the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], with [that] true [and] sincere of Faith [and] Aspiration, uphold [the] great name of ten thousand virtues.

Analogous to [the] shining sun overhead [in the] sky, moving [on the] great king’s path. Not only [will] spirits, demons, sprites [and] goblins, level [their] footprints [to] eliminate [their] traces, even thoughts of diverging paths [of] right [and] wrong, also [have] no way [to] arise.

Advancing then, [to the] utmost of [this, is] no more than saying, [that when] mindfulness arrives [at] skills pure [and] efforts utmost, then [the] entire mind is [the] Buddha, [the] entire Buddha is [the] mind, [the] mind [and the] Buddha [are] not two, [the] mind [and the] Buddha [are] one thus, that is all.

[With] this principle [and] this practice, only fearing that [there are] people [who do] not know [them, then] not able [to] unite [with the] vow of [the] Buddha [to] universally deliver sentient beings. How can it be secret, then not transmitted, [or] only transmitted to you?

If [there] are those secretly, orally transmitted [and] mentally received wonderful secret [methods, they] are the same as evil demons’ external paths, thus not [the] Buddha’s Dharma.
