[10] Blessings [And] Wisdom’s Instructions
People must not [4] not together cultivate blessings [and] wisdom.
[i] 种种利物,常行方便,作一切善,戒一切恶,所谓修福也;
[i] [With] all kinds [of] benefits [for] sentient beings, constantly practising [with] skilful means, [to] do all good, [and] abstain [from] all evils, [this is] so-called cultivating blessings.
[ii] Knowing cause [and] effect, understand transgressions [and] blessings, [and] contemplate [the] Śākyan clan’s books [i.e. Buddhist scriptures: sūtras: 经], [for] inner understanding [of] nature’s principles. Contemplate [the] Confucian books, [for] outer understanding [of the] worldly path. [This is] so-called cultivating wisdom.
[Original headnotes: (The) Śākyan clan’s books within (are) also (with) not few worldly Dharma (teachings), like (the) Sūtra (Of) Dharma Verses (And) Analogies [i.e. Dharma Padā Vadāna Sūtra], (which) for kings, spoke (on the) five practices, (and the) Sūtra (Of) Mixed Treasures’ Treasury [i.e. Saṃyukta Ratnapiṭaka Sūtra], (which) for kings, spoke (on the) seven practices (and) three practices, all therefore (for) understanding (the) worldly path.]
[i] Cultivating blessings attains wealth [and] honour, [and] [ii] cultivating wisdom attains understanding [that is] clear.

[1] Cultivating wisdom [and] not cultivating blessings, [there is] understanding [that is] clear, yet [having] poverty [with] difficulties. [2] Cultivating blessings [and] not cultivating wisdom, [there are] wealth [and] honour, yet [having] ignorance. [3] [With] blessings [and] wisdom, if together cultivated, [there are] wealth [and] honour, and understanding [that is] clear. [4] Those [with the] two all not cultivated, [are with] ignorance and poverty [with] difficulties.
[The] Buddhas, [3] with blessings [and] wisdom together cultivated, [are] thus called as [the] Two-Legged Honoured [Ones], calling [them to be with] blessings [and] wisdom, [these] two sufficient.
[Note 1: ‘足’ means both ‘legs’ and ‘sufficiency’.]
[In the] past, [there] were two persons together cultivating practices, [with] one person focused [on] [2] cultivating blessings, [and] one person focused [on] [1] cultivating wisdom.
经数世后,专 [2] 修福者,因受福而作恶,堕于象中,以有馀福,人乘之以战,有胜敌之功,国王赐以璎珞;
Passing numerous lives later, that focused [on] [2] cultivating blessings, because [of] receiving blessings, then doing evil, fell within [the] elephant [realm]. With existing remaining blessings, [by] humans riding him [to be] used [for] war, having merits of conquering [the] enemy, [the] king bestowed [him with] necklaces.
That focused [on] [1] cultivating wisdom, attained [the] Arhat fruit, with not previously cultivating blessings thus, as [a] monastic then begging [for] food, mostly not getting it.

「 [2] 修福不修慧,象身挂璎珞;
Thus [does a] verse says,
[2] ‘Cultivating blessings [and] not cultivating wisdom, [on the] elephant’s body hangs necklaces. [1] Cultivating wisdom [and] not cultivating blessings, [the] Arhat’s offerings [are] sparse.’
These blessings [and] wisdom [are] therefore [those that] must not [be] not together cultivated.
[Original headnotes: (Those) able (to) use (the) Pure Land Dharma Door (to) encourage people, then are [3] (with) blessings (and) wisdom both cultivated.]
若 [a] 慧胜于福,则知罪福而戒慎,故无坠堕;
[There is] definitely no choice, but rather [to] enable [a] wisdom [to be] superior to blessings, [and] not cause [b] blessings [to be] superior to wisdom. If [a] wisdom [is] superior to blessings, then knowing transgressions [and] blessings, then [with] precepts cautious, thus without falling. If [b] blessings [are] superior to wisdom, then because [of] receiving blessings, then doing evil, thus having falling.
[The] Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says, ‘Receiving present joy, [is] planting [of] future suffering.’ [This] is [so].
[Note 2: As the receiving of joy from limited past good karmas (善业) in this present life is also depleting of them, without more good karmas created in time, this will lead to future suffering, in this present life or the future life, when remaining evil karmas (恶业) bear fruit.]

[A] verse says,
[5] ‘Together cultivating blessings with wisdom, furthermore, again mindful [of Ā]mítuó[fó], in [the] Nine Grades [of] lotus flowers, [attaining the] first, again, how [can there be] doubt?’
Those people [with the] Purification Precepts understood clearly [and] cultivated, [will] definitely [have the] High Grade’s High Births thus.
Furthermore, [a] verse says,
[6] ‘Although cultivating blessings with wisdom, not knowing [to be] mindful [of Ā]mítuó[fó], yet [to] attain [as an] Arhat, [are] rebirths without completion’s time.’
In this world cultivating practice [to] attain [the] Arhat fruit, then [is there] liberation [from] rebirth thus [which is very difficult, if not impossible as this Dharma-Ending Age (末法时期) deepens].
