娑婆十难与净土十易
Sahā World’s Ten Difficulties And Pure Land’s Ten Easinesses
娑婆十难
[The] Sahā [World’s] Ten Difficulties
慈云云。五浊得道为难。净土修行则易。今以娑婆十难净土十易。
[Repentance Master] Cíyún (慈云忏主: 963—1032) said, [that with the] five defilements attaining [the] path is difficult, [while in] Pure Land cultivation [is] thus easy. Now with [this] Sahā [World’s] ten difficulties [and the] Pure Land’s ten [kind of] ease, then choosing [to] show them [here].
十难者。
These [are the] ten difficulties.
一不常值佛。三界险道。佛为导师。众生业重。生不值佛。
[1] First, not constantly encountering [a] Buddha. [The] three realms [are] dangerous paths, [and the] Buddhas are [our] guiding teachers. [As] sentient beings’ [evil] karmas [are] heavy, [we are] born without encountering [a] Buddha. Śākya[muni Buddha has entered] Parinirvāṇa already, [and] Maitreya [Buddha is] yet [to] arise. [The] virtuous [and] noble [are] secretly concealed, [as] evil dharmas increase [and] blaze thus.
二不闻说法。像季浇漓所有言说。惟谈外道邪恶之论。不闻正法故。
[2] Second, not hearing speaking [of the] Dharma. [The Dharma] Resemblance Age’s last period [is] without morals [in] all taught through speaking. Only [with] discussions of external paths’ evils, not hearing [the] Right Dharma thus.
三恶友牵缠。邪恶伴侣。希求利养。扇惑行人。堕恶道故。
[3] Third, [with] evil ‘friends’ entangled. [With] evil companions, hoping [and] seeking gains, instigating [and] bewitching practitioners, [who] fall [into] evil paths thus.
四群魔恼乱。九十六种外道恶人坏乱正法。使修行者不成就故。
[4] Fourth, [with] demonic hordes troubling [and] disturbing. Ninety-six kinds [of] external paths’ evil persons corrupt [and] confuse [the] Right Dharma, causing cultivators [to] not [be] accomplished thus.
五轮回不息。循环六趣。如汲井轮无休息故。
[5] Fifth, [with] rebirth not ceasing, cycling [in the] six realms, like drawing water from [a] well, [with the] wheel without rest thus.
六难逃恶趣。往来三界。随业受报。虽生天上。未免沦坠故。
[6] Sixth, [with] difficulty escaping [the] evil realms. Coming [and] going [in the] three realms, according [to] karma receiving retribution. Although born [in the] heavens above, unavoidably sinking [and] falling thus.
七尘缘障道。汩没尘劳。为出世法之障礙故。
[7] Seventh, [with] worldly affinities [i.e. defiled conditions] obstructing [the] path, buried [in] afflictions, as obstacles of world-transcending Dharma.
八寿命短促。人生百岁。夭横者多。光阴迅速。菩萨大道难成办故。
[8] Eighth, [with] lifespans short [and] fleeting, human lives [are around a] hundred years. [As] those [with] premature [and] accidental deaths [are] many, [and] time’s [passing is] swift, Bodhisattvas’ great path [is] difficult [to be] accomplished thus.
九修行退失。此土修行断见思惑。方能不退。初心行人未免退堕故。
[9] Ninth, [with] cultivation regressing [and] lost. [In] this land cultivating severing [of] views’ [and] thoughts’ confusions, then able [to] not regress, practitioners [with] initial minds unavoidably regress [and] fall thus.
十尘劫难成。如大通佛世闻法之徒。退大执小。经尘点劫。
[10] Tenth, [with] dust [motes of] kalpas difficult [to be] accomplished. Like those followers [of] great ‘experts’ [of the] Buddha’s worldly Dharma, regressing [from the] great [and] attached [to the] small. Passing dust motes [of] kalpas, dwelling [on] Voice-Hearers’ ground, although going through [a] long time, yet [to] accomplish [the] great path thus.
净土十易
[The] Pure Land’s Ten [Kinds Of] Ease
净土十易者。
[The] Pure Land [has] these ten [kinds of] ease.
一常得见佛。无量寿佛成道以来。经十大劫。常住不灭故。
[1] First, [is] constant attainment [of] sight [of Amitābha] Buddha [i.e. Āmítuófó], [as] since Immeasurable Life Buddha accomplished [the] path [to Buddhahood, having] passed ten great kalpas [i.e. world cycles], constantly abides [and does] not die [even if Parinirvāṇa is manifested much later] thus.
二常闻法音。佛及菩萨树林水鸟常宣妙法故。
[2] Second, [is] constant hearing [of the] Dharma’s sounds, [as [the] Buddha and Bodhisattvas, trees, groves, waters [and] birds constantly proclaim [the] wonderful Dharma thus.
三圣贤会集。观音势至为其胜友。诸上善人俱会一处故。
[3] Third, [is] gathering [of] noble [and] virtuous [ones, as it is with] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [and Great] Strength Arrived [Bodhisattvas] as their supreme [good-knowing] friends, [with] all superior good persons together meeting [in] one place thus.
四远离魔事。虽有天魔。皆护佛法。令修行人速成就故。
[4] Fourth, [is] far departure [from] demonic matters, [as] although [there] are heavenly demons [reborn there, they have reformed and will] all protect [the] Buddha’s Dharma [teachings, to] enable practitioners [to] quickly [be] accomplished thus.
五不受轮回。莲华化生。无复轮转生死苦趣故。
[5] Fifth, [is to] not receive rebirth, [as of] lotus flowers’ transformed births, [they will] not again [be] reborn [in the] realms [of] birth [and] death thus.
六永离恶道。彼佛国土无三恶道。名字尚不闻故。
[6] Sixth, [is] eternal departure [from the] evil paths, [as] that Buddha Land [is] without [the] three evil paths [of hell-beings, hungry ghosts and animals, with their] names even not heard thus.
七胜缘助道。琼楼玉殿。珍衣美馔。皆为助道之资具故。
[7] Seventh, [are the] supreme conditions [for] supporting [the] path [to Buddhahood, as] exquisite towers, jade halls, precious clothing [and] delicious food, [are] all as supportive instruments that support [the] path thus.
八寿命无量。众生寿量。与佛齐等。人天凡夫尽其智力。莫知其数故。
[8] Eighth, [is] lifespan [that is] immeasurable, [as] sentient beings’ lifespans, with [the] Buddha’s, [are] all together equal, [with] human [and] heavenly ordinary beings, [even if] exhausting their power [of] wisdom, [still] not knowing their numbers thus.
九入正定聚。众生生者皆是阿鞞䟦致。无退转故。
[9] Ninth, [is] entry [of the] Right Definite Assembly [that is bound for Buddhahood], as those sentient beings born [there] are all Avaivartikas, [who are] without retrogression thus.
十一生行满。常随佛学。一生常得无上菩提故。
[10] Tenth, [is to, in] one lifetime, [with all Dharma] practices completed, [as there is] constantly following [of the] Buddha [to] learn [from him, in] one lifetime constantly attaining [the path to] unsurpassable Bodhi [i.e. complete awakening of Buddhahood] thus.
