Unsurpassable Profound [And] Wonderful Meditation [i.e. Chán]
[The] Great Collection Sūtra says,
‘If [a] person [is] only mindful [of] Āmítuó[fó by name or image, this] is named [as the] unsurpassable profound [and] wonderful Chán [meditation]. When [with the] sincere mind [reciting or] visualising seeing [the] Buddha, [this] is the same as [the] non-arising [and] non-ceasing Dharma.’
Thus knowing [that] Chán [and] Pure Land [are of] one body, [in] principle [and] practice without difference.
Many seen [are the] world’s people, [who] falsely divide [them to be] right [and] wrong.
[Being] attached [to] Chán [and] slandering Pure Land, [how] can [this] not [be] lamentable?
[Let me] chat [to] state [my] humble thoughts, with [them to] encourage myself only.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is the] unsurpassable profound [and] wonderful meditation [i.e. Chán]. [It] is the same [as the] non-arising [and non-]ceasing, [as the] Thus Come [One] personally [with his] mouth declared.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is with] subtle wonders most profoundly secret. [Of his] pure name, [if] silent [and] not spoken [of, even the] far-reaching Bodhidharma [will] say, ‘[I do] not know.’
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is Bodhidharma from the] West coming’s true intention. Not needing [to] ask what way, only [when] dying, suddenly [and] directly going [Pure Land].
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, in a] green pool [is the] sky’s moon. Understanding [it] clearly, [with it] appearing, after all, without other objects.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, with it only, in] empty space [with] all [else] dissolving [and] ending. Everywhere filling [the] ten directions’ realms, seeking it, [it] cannot [be] attained.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, has the] ten thousand Dharma [teachings] all thus. [Like the] great ocean entering [a] pore, [a] mustard [seed] taking [in] Sumeru.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is] non-birth’s true true [and] wonderful method. Originally [and] precisely [as it] is, [if] showing off [to be] ‘clever’, instead becoming clumsy.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is with him like the] ten directions’ [beings’] mother recollecting [his] children. Deluded children [if] towards [the] external seeking, when [will their] suffering [and] pain end?
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is the] most supreme maṇi treasure. Able [to] fulfill all vows, [to] quickly accomplish [the] unsurpassable path.
[This] one line [of] Āmítuó[fó, is what] all Buddhas all praise. [With] meritorious virtues difficult [to] conceive, be sure not to give rise [to] slighting.
