[56] How All Buddhas Encourage Faith In Amitā Buddha
莫极顽冥
Be Not Extremely Stupid, Dull And Ignorant

甲三、流通分
A3: Transmission Section

【解】:信愿持名一法,圆收圆超一切法门。

[Explanation]: [With] Faith [and] Aspiration upholding [Āmítuófó’s] name, [this] one Dharma, completely receives [and] completely transcends all [other] Dharma Doors.

竖与一切法门浑同,横与一切法门迥异

Vertically with all Dharma Doors combined [as the] same, horizontally with all Dharma Doors totally different.

(诸经论中,亦有横义,乃随断惑浅深,即于同居见上三土。是则约证名横, 约断仍竖也)。

(Within all sūtras [and] treatises, [they] likewise [have] horizontal meanings, thus according [to] severing [of] confusions [being] shallow [or] profound, immediately in [the] Together Dwelling [Land] seeing [the] higher three lands. This [is] then restricted [to] realisation named [as] ‘horizontal’, [and] restricted [to] severing [that is] still vertical.)

既无问自说,谁堪倡募流通。

Since without asking self-spoken, who [is] adequately capable of advocating, raising [and] transmitting [it]?

唯佛与佛,乃能究尽诸法实相。

Only Buddhas with Buddhas, [are] thus able [to] understand completely all dharmas’ True Form.

此经唯佛境界,唯佛佛可与流通耳。

[As] this sutra [is] only [on the] Buddhas’ realm, only Buddhas [with] Buddhas can [be] with [it] transmitted.

文为二:初、普劝,二、结劝。
Text [As] Two [Parts]: First, Universal Exhortation, Second, Conclusive Exhortation.

乙初、普劝
B1: Universal Exhortation

中三:初、劝信流通,二、劝愿流通,三、劝行流通。
Three [Parts] Within: First, Transmission [On] Exhortation [Of] Faith, Second, Transmission [On] Exhortation [Of] Aspiration, Third, Transmission [On] Exhortation [Of] Practice.

中二:初、略引标题,二、征释经题。
Two [Parts] Within: First, Brief Foreword [Of] Title, Second, Inquiry [And] Explanation [Of] Sūtra’s Title.

丁初、略引标题
D1: Brief Foreword [Of] Title

中六:初、东方,至六、上方。唐译十方,今略摄故。
Six [Parts] Within: First, Eastern Direction, Until [The] Sixth, Above Direction. Táng Translation [is with] ten directions, now briefly gathered thus.

戊初、东方
E1: Eastern Direction

【经】: 舍利弗,如我今者,赞叹阿弥陀佛不可思议功德之利,东方亦有阿鞞佛、须弥相佛、大须弥佛、须弥光佛、妙音佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是《称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经》。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, like I now, highly praise [the] benefits of Amitā Buddha’s inconceivable meritorious virtues, [in the] eastern direction, [there] likewise are Akṣobhya Buddha, Sume[ru] Form Buddha, Great Sume[ru] Buddha, Sume[ru] Light Buddha, Wonderful Voice Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

【解】:「不可思议」,略有五意:

[Explanation]: [That] ‘inconceivable’, briefly has five meanings.

一、横超三界,不俟断惑;

First, horizontally transcending [the] three realms, not waiting [to] sever confusions.

二、即西方横具四土,非由渐证;

Second, immediately [reaching the] Western [Land], horizontally complete [with the] Four Lands, [which are] not due [to] gradual realisation.

三、但持名号,不假禅观诸方便;

Third, only upholding [the Buddha’s] name, [this does] not need meditative contemplation [and] all [other] skilful [means].

四、一七为期,不藉多劫多生多年月;

Fourth, [with] one [to] seven [days] as [the] duration [for Practice], not relying on many kalpas, many lives, many years [and] months.

五、持一佛名,即为诸佛护念,不异持一切佛名。

Fifth, upholding one Buddha’s name, thus [is to be] by all Buddhas’ protected mindfully, not different [from] upholding all Buddhas’ names.

此皆导师大愿行之所成就,故曰「阿弥陀佛不可思议功德之利」 。

All these are those accomplished [by our] guiding teacher’s great vows [and] practices, therefore saying, ‘[the] benefits of Amitā Buddha’s inconceivable meritorious virtues’.

又行人信愿持名,全摄佛功德成自功德,故亦曰「阿弥陀佛不可思议功德之利」。

Also, [as] practitioners [with] Faith [and] Aspiration upholding [the Buddha’s] name, completely gather [the] Buddha’s meritorious virtues [to] become personal meritorious virtues, therefore likewise saying ‘[the] benefits of Amitā Buddha’s inconceivable meritorious virtues’.

下又曰「诸佛不可思议功德」,「我不可思议功德」,是诸佛、释迦,皆以阿弥为自也。

[The] below [text] also says, ‘all Buddhas’ inconceivable meritorious virtues’, [and] ‘my inconceivable meritorious virtues’, are all Buddhas, [and] Śākya[muni Buddha], all with Ami[tā Buddha’s] meritorious virtues] as one’s own.

「阿閦鞞」,此云「无动」。

[On] ‘Akṣobhya’, this [is] to say ‘Immovable’.

佛有无量德,应有无量名。

[As the] Buddhas have immeasurable virtues, [they] should have immeasurable names.

随机而立,或取因,或取果,或性,或相,或行愿等。

According [to] situations then established, perhaps obtained [from] causes, or obtained [from] effects, or nature, or forms, or practices [and] vows, [and] others.

虽举一隅,仍具四悉。

Although raising [just] one ‘corner’, [it is] still complete [with the] Four Sid[dhāntas].

[Note 2:

Four Siddhāntas’ (四悉檀) Four Benefits (四益):

The Siddhāntas are the Buddha’s teaching methods, from the simple to the profound, for giving the Dharma to all sentient beings according to their capacities.

(1) Worldly Siddhānta (世界悉檀) for Joy’s Benefit (欢喜益)
(2) Individual Siddhānta (各各为人悉檀) for Giving Rise To Goodnesses’ Benefit (生善益)
(3) Curative Siddhānta (对治悉檀) for Elimination Of Evils’ Benefit (灭恶益)  
(4) Supreme Truth’s Siddhānta (第一义悉檀) for Entering Of Principles’ Benefit (入理益)]

随一一名,显所诠德。

.According [to] each [and every] one name, revealing that explained virtue.

劫寿说之,不能悉也。

[With a] kalpa’s lifespan speaking [of] those, [it is] not able [to speak of] all.

东方虚空不可尽,世界亦不可尽。

As the] eastern direction’s empty space [is] inexhaustible, [the] worlds [are] likewise inexhaustible.

世界不可尽,住世诸佛亦不可尽。

[As the] worlds [are] inexhaustible, all Buddhas abiding [in these] worlds [are] likewise inexhaustible.

略举「恒河沙」耳。

[This is] briefly raised [as the] ‘Ganges River’s sands’ [number] only.

此等诸佛,各「出广长舌相」劝信此经。

These [and] all other Buddhas, each ‘extend [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form’ [to] encourage Faith [in] this sūtra.

而众生犹不生信,顽冥极矣!

Yet, [if] sentient beings still [do] not give rise [to] Faith, [they are] stupid, dull [and] ignorant [to the] extreme!

常人三世不妄语,舌能至鼻。

[If] ordinary persons, [for] three lifetimes [do] not [have] false speech, [their] tongues [will be] able [to] reach [their] noses.

藏果头佛,三大僧祇劫不妄语,舌薄广长可覆面。

[As] Buddhas in [the] Tripiṭaka, [for] three great asaṃkhyeya kalpas [did] not [have] false speech, [their] tongues [are] thin, broad [and] long, able [to] cover [their] faces.

今证大乘净土妙门,所以「遍覆三千」,表理诚称真,事实非谬也。

Now [for] confirming [the] Great Vehicle’s Pure Land’s Wonderful [Dharma] Door, therefore ‘completely covering [their] three-thousandfold [great-thousandfold worlds]’, expressing [its] principles sincerely [and] praising [these] truths, [to be] factual [and] not erroneous.

标出经题,流通之本。

Marking out [this] sūtra’s title, [as its] basis of transmission.

什师顺此方好,略译今题,巧合持名妙行。

Master [Kumāra]jīva accorded [with] this region’s preference, [to] briefly translate [it to have the] present title, ‘coinciding’ [with the] wonderful Practice [of] upholding [the] name.

奘师译云《称赞净土佛摄受经》。

Master [Xuán]zàng translated [it] to say, ‘Sūtra [On] Praises [Of The] Pure Land [With] Buddhas’ Protection [And] Reception’.

文有详略,义无增减。

[With these] texts having [the] detailed [and] brief, [their] meanings [are] without [those] increased [or] decreased.

戊二、南方
E2: Southern Direction

【经】:舍利弗,南方世界,有日月灯佛、名闻光佛、大焰肩佛、须弥灯佛、无量精进佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是《称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经》。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, [in the] southern direction’s worlds, [there] are Sun [And] Moon Lamp Buddha, Renown Light Buddha, Great Flaming Shoulders Buddha, Sume[ru] Lamp Buddha, Immeasurable Diligence Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

戊三、西方
E3: Western Direction

【经】:舍利弗,西方世界,有无量寿佛、无量相佛、无量幢佛、大光佛、大明佛、宝相佛、净光佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是《称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经》。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, [in the] western direction’s worlds, [there] are Immeasurable Life Buddha, Immeasurable Form Buddha, Immeasurable Banner Buddha, Great Light Buddha, Great Brightness Buddha, Treasure Form Buddha, Pure Light Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

【解】:「无量寿佛」,与弥陀同名,十方各方面同名诸佛无量也。

[Explanation]: ‘Immeasurable Life Buddha’, with [Ā]mítuó[fó, has the] same name, [as the] ten directions’ each direction’s side’s similarly named many Buddhas [are] immeasurable.

然即是导师亦可,为度众生,不妨转赞释迦如来所说。

However, even [if this] is [our] guiding teacher [i.e. Āmítuófó], [it is] also possible. For delivering sentient beings, there is no harm in [taking his] turn [to] praise Śākya[muni] Thus Come [One, for] that spoken.

戊四、北方
E4: Northern Direction

【经】:舍利弗,北方世界,有焰肩佛、最胜音佛、难沮佛、日生佛、网明佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是《称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经》。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, [in the] northern direction’s worlds, [there] are Flaming Shoulders Buddha, Most Victorious Voice Buddha, Difficult-[To]-Defeat Buddha, Sun Birth Buddha, Net [Of] Brightness Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

戊五、下方
E5: Below Direction

【经】:舍利弗,下方世界,有师子佛、名闻佛、名光佛、达摩佛、法幢佛、持法佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, [in the] below direction’s worlds, [there] are Lion Buddha, Renown Buddha, Name [Of] Light Buddha, Dharma Buddha, Dharma Banner Buddha, Upholding Dharma Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

【解】: 此界水轮、金轮、风轮之下,复有下界非非想天等,乃至重重无尽也。

[Explanation]: Of this world’s water wheel, gold wheel [and] wind wheel below, again has below worlds [with] Neither [Perception Nor] Non-Perception Heaven [and] others, and even [with] layer upon layer inexhaustible.

「达摩」,此云 「 法 」 。

[On] ‘Dámó’ [i.e. Dharma], this [is] to say [the] ‘Dharma’.

戊六、上方
E6: Above Direction

【经】:舍利弗,上方世界,有梵音佛、宿王佛、香上佛、香光佛、大焰肩佛、杂色宝华严身佛、娑罗树王佛、宝华德佛、见一切义佛、如须弥山佛,如是等恒河沙数诸佛,各于其国,出广长舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,说诚实言:『汝等众生,当信是《称赞不可思议功德一切诸佛所护念经》。』

[Sūtra]: Śāriputra, [in the] above direction’s worlds, [there] are Brahmā Voice Buddha, Constellation King Buddha, Fragrance Superior Buddha, Fragrant Light Buddha, Great Flaming Shoulders Buddha, Varicoloured Treasure Flower Adorned Body Buddha, Śāla Tree King Buddha, Treasure Flower Virtue Buddha, Seeing-All-Meanings Buddha, Sume[ru] Mountainlike Buddha, such [and] other Ganges River’s sands’ number [of] all Buddhas, each in his land, extending [the] broad [and] long tongue’s form, [that] covers completely [his] three-thousandfold great-thousandfold world, speaking [these] truthful words, “You all sentient beings, should believe this Sūtra [With] Praises [Of] Inconceivable Meritorious Virtues That All Buddhas Protect Mindfully.”

【解】:此界非非想天之上,复有上界风轮、金轮及三界等,重重无尽也。

[Explanation]: Of this world’s Neither [Perception Nor] Non-Perception Heaven above, again has above worlds [with the] wind wheel, gold wheel, Three Realms and others, [with] layer upon layer inexhaustible.

【解】:问:诸方必有净土,何偏赞西方?  

[Explanation]: Question: [As] all directions definitely have Pure Lands, why [is there] particular praise [of the] Western [Land]?

答:此亦非善问。假使赞阿閦佛国,汝又疑偏东方,展转戏论。

Answer: This likewise [is] not [a] good question. If praising Akṣo[bhya] Buddha’s land, you [will] also doubt particular [praise of the] Eastern [Land], continuously changing [in] frivolous discussion.

【解】:问:何不遍缘法界?

[Explanation]: Question: Why not [have the] complete condition [of the] Dharma realm?

答:有三义:令初机易标心故,阿弥本愿胜故,佛与此土众生偏有缘故。  

Answer: [There are] three meanings. (1) [For] leading beginners [to] easily express [their] mind [of Aspiration] thus, (2) Āmí[tuófó]’s fundamental vows [are] supreme thus, [and as (3) this] Buddha with this land’s sentient beings particularly has [karmic] conditions [of affinity] thus.

盖佛度生,生受化,其间难易浅深,总在于缘。缘之所在,恩德弘深。 

About Buddhas’ delivering [of] sentient beings, [and] sentient beings’ receiving [of] transformation, between them, [their] difficulty [and] easiness, shallowness [and] profundity, all depend on conditions. [With] those conditions that [are] there, [their kind] benevolence [is] great [and] profound.

种种教启,能令欢喜信入,能令触动宿种,能令魔障难遮,能令体性开发。

[With] all kinds [of] teachings expounding, [they are] able [to] lead joyful faith [to] enter, able [to] lead [to being in] touch [with] past seeds [of good roots], able [to] lead demonic obstacles [and] difficulties [to be] protected [from, and] able [to] lead Essential Nature [to] develop.

诸佛本从法身垂迹,固结缘种,若世出世,悉不可思议。

All Buddhas originally from [the] Dharma Body approach [with] signs, [to] firmly form [karmic] conditions’ seeds, as worldly [and] world-transcending [teachings], all [of which are] inconceivable.

尊隆于教乘,举扬于海会,沁入于苦海,慈契于寂光,所以万德钦承,群灵拱极。 

[With] honourable sounding [aloud] of [this] teaching’s vehicle, raising [its] praises in ocean[-wide] assemblies, seeping [to] enter [the] suffering’s ocean, [with] compassion aligned to [Āmítuófó’s] still light, so [that his] ten thousand virtues [can be] respectfully received [by] sentient beings, [like those] surrounding [the] circumpolar star.

当知佛种从缘起,缘即法界。

[It] should [be] known [that the] Buddha seed from [a] condition arises, [and this] condition [is] thus [the] Dharma realm.

一念一切念,一生一切生。

[In] one thought [is] all thoughts, [in] one birth [is] all births.

一香一华,一声一色,乃至受忏授记,摩顶垂手,十方三世,莫不遍融。

[With] one fragrance, one flower, one sound, one form, and even accepting repentance, conferring predictions, rubbing crowns [with] lowered hands, [in the] ten directions [and] three periods, none [are] not complete harmoniously.

故此增上缘因,名法界缘起。

Therefore, these increasing [of] superior conditions’ causes, [are] named [as the] Dharma realm’s conditions [of] arising.

此正所谓遍缘法界者也。

This precisely [is] that so-called complete condition [of the] Dharma realm.

浅位人便可决志专求,深位人亦不必舍西方而别求华藏。

Shallow positions’ persons can then [have] determined Aspiration [with] focused seeking [of the Western Land, and] profound positions’ likewise need not renounce [the] Western [Land], and separately seek [the] Flower Treasury [World].

若谓西方是权,华藏是实,西方小,华藏大者,全堕众生遍计执情。

If saying that [the] Western [Land] is [a] skilful [means, while the] Flower Treasury [World] is true, [and that the] Western [Land is] small, [while the] Flower Treasury [World is] great, [these] completely fall [into] sentient beings’ completely contrived attachment’s passions.

以不达权实一体,大小无性故也。  

[This is] with not realising [that the] skilful [and] true [are] one body, [with the] great [and] small without [fixed] nature thus.
