Answer: The answer is in the following excerpt from ‘The Great Right And Vast Buddha Flower Adornment Sūtra’s (Mahā Vaipulya Buddha Avataṃsaka Sūtra) Chapter [On] Ten Evils’.
迦叶菩萨白佛言：「世尊！唯愿如来为我解说，不饮酒、不食肉者，得几所福？」
Kāśyapa Bodhisattva [to Śākyamuni] Buddha said, ‘World-Honoured [One, I] only wish [the] Thus Come [One, to] for me explain, [of] those not drinking alcohol, [and] not eating meat, [of the] attained, [how] much are their blessings?’
佛告迦叶：「假使有人，象马、牛羊、琉璃、珍宝、璎珞、国城、妻子，持用布施，犹亦不如有人能断酒肉，百千万分不如其一。
[The] Buddha told Kāśyapa [Bodhisattva], ‘If [there] is [a] person, [with] elephants, horses, cows, goats, lapis lazuli, precious treasures, necklaces, countries, cities, wives [and] children, having [and] using [them for] giving, [this is] still also not equal to having [a] person, [who is] able [to] sever [from] alcohol [and] meat, [of a] hundred thousand [of] ten thousand [i.e. 1,000,000,000; one billion] parts [of blessings], not equal to one [of] that.
复置是事，假使有人百千两金遍满三千大千世界，持用布施，犹亦不如有人能断酒肉，百千万分不如其一。
Again, to lay out these matters, if [there] is [a] person [with] hundreds [of] thousands [of] taels [of] gold everywhere filling [the] three-thousandfold great thousandfold world, having [and] using [them for] giving, [this is] still also not equal to having [a] person, [who is] able [to] sever [from] alcohol [and] meat, [of a] hundred thousand [of] ten thousand parts [of blessings], not equal to one [of] that.
复置是事，假使有能铸金为人数百，持用布施，犹亦不如有人能断酒肉，百千万分不如其一。
Again, to lay out these matters, if [there] is [a person] able [to] cast gold for people [of] several hundred, having [and] using [them for] giving, [this is] still also not equal to having [a] person, [who is] able [to] sever [from] alcohol [and] meat, [of a] hundred thousand [of] ten thousand parts [of blessings], not equal to one [of] that.
复置是事，假使有人造作幡华宝盖，遍满三千大千世界，犹亦不如有人能断酒肉，百千万分不如其一。
Again, to lay out these matters, if [there] is [a] person [who] makes banners [with] flowers [and] treasure canopies, everywhere filling [the] three-thousandfold great thousandfold world, [this is] still also not equal to having [a] person, [who is] able [to] sever [from] alcohol [and] meat, [of a] hundred thousand [of] ten thousand parts [of blessings], not equal to one [of] that.
复置是事，假使有人造大浮图宝塔，檐檐相次，如稻麻竹苇，上至梵天，不如有人能断酒肉，百千万分不如其一。
Again, to lay out these matters, if [there] is [a] person [who] builds [a] great stūpa, [a] treasure pagoda, [from] eaves [to] eaves, one after another, like rice, hemp, bamboo [and] reeds, up until [the] Brahma heavens, [this is] not equal to having [a] person able [to] sever [from] alcohol [and] meat, [of a] hundred thousand [of] ten thousand parts [of blessings], not equal to one [of] that.
善男子！不食肉者，现世菩萨，则非凡夫。…」
Good man! Those [who do] not eat meat, [are in this] present life Bodhisattvas, thus not ordinary beings [without Bodhicitta]… ‘
总结：断酒肉的功德远超布施极多动物、珠宝、土地、家人、黄金、幡盖与宝塔，于百千万倍。
Summary: The meritorious virtues of severing from meat and alcohol far exceed that from giving away of much animals, gems, treasures, jewellery, lands, families, gold, banners, canopies and stūpas, by more than one billion times.
因为慈悲不要求一切众生的杀害，给予无畏布施，断肉是菩提心的表现。因此，能造大功德。
Severing from meat-eating creates great meritorious virtues by giving fearlessness, as an expression of Bodhicitta, by compassionately avoiding demand for killing and harming of all beings.
戒酒可以防止酒醉和成瘾，导致破其他戒的可能性。它可以保护对心理健康至关重要的正念，并预防与饮酒有关的身体疾病。
Severing from alcohol-drinking prevents intoxication and addiction, which might lead to breaking of other precepts. It protects Right Mindfulness, which is essential for mental health, and prevents drinking-related physical sicknesses.
