[3] [The] Third Doubt
[为何偏生一净土？]
[Why Be Born In One Particular Pure Land?]
问：十方诸佛土，功德皆平等。何不普念一切功德，生一切净土，而乃偏求一佛净土耶？
Question: [As the] ten directions’ all Buddha lands, [have] meritorious virtues all equal, why not [be] universally mindful [of] all [their] meritorious virtues, [to be] born [in] all Pure Lands, and thus particularly seek one Buddha’s Pure Land?
答：诸佛净土，固皆平等。但众生根钝，浊乱者多，若不专心一处，三昧难成。故专念阿弥陀佛，即是一相三昧。
Answer: All Buddhas’ Pure Lands, [are] certainly all equal. However, [as] sentient beings’ [spiritual] roots [are] dull, [with] those defiled [and] scattered many, if not focusing [the] mind [in] one place, samādhi [is] difficult [to] accomplish. Thus [with] focused mindfulness [of] Āmítuófó, [this] is the same as One Form Samādhi.
《随愿往生经》云：「普广菩萨问佛：『十方悉有净土，世尊何故偏赞西方弥陀净土，专遣往生？』
[The] Sūtra [On] Rebirth As Aspired says, ‘Universal Vastness Bodhisattva asked [the] Buddha, “[As the] ten directions all have Pure Lands, [the] World-Honoured [One, for] what reason, particularly praises [the] Western direction’s Āmítuófó’s Pure Land, focusing [on] sending [beings to be] reborn [there]?”
佛告普广：『阎浮提众生，心多浊乱，为此偏赞西方一佛净土，使诸众生，专心一境，易得往生。』」
[The] Buddha told Universal Vastness, “[As] Jambudvīpa’s sentient beings’ minds [are] mostly defiled [and] scattered, for this particularly praising [the] western direction’s one Buddha’s Pure Land, [to] enable all sentient beings, [to have] focused minds [on] one realm, [to] easily attain rebirth [there].”‘
《华严经》云：「一切诸佛身，即是一佛身。譬如净满月，普应一切水。」
[The] Flower Adornment Sūtra says, ‘All Buddhas’ bodies, are the same as one Buddha’s body. For example, like [the] pure full moon, universally reflecting [in] all waters.’
故知念一佛，即是念一切佛。生一净土，无异生一切净土也。
Thus knowing [that] mindfulness [of] one Buddha, is the same as mindfulness [of] all Buddhas. Birth [in] one Pure Land, [is] not different [from] birth [in] all Pure Lands.
