[2] The Second Doubt: Why ‘Abandon’ This Defiled Land And Seek That Pure Land? 第二疑:为何舍此秽土而求彼净土?

问:[1] 诸法体空,本来无生,平等寂灭。何乃舍此求彼,欲生西方?

Question: [1] All dharmas’ [i.e. phenomena of mind and matter] [are] essentially empty, originally [with] non-birth [i.e. unborn; non-arising], equal [with] stillness [and] cessation. Why then, ‘abandon’ this [and] seek that, [by] desiring birth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界)]?

[2] 经云:「心净则佛土净,欲求净土,当先净心。」何乃不求净心,而求净土?

[2] [A] sūtra says, ‘[With the] mind pure, then [is the] Buddha land pure, desiring [to] seek [a] Pure Land, [there] should first [be] purifying [of the] mind.’ Why then, not seek purifying [of the] mind, yet seek Pure Land?

答:[1] 欲生西方者,谓是舍此而求彼。则不欲生西方者,独非舍彼而求此耶?

Answer: [1] [If of] those desiring birth [in the] Western [Pure Land], calling this [to be] abandoning this and seeking that, then [of] those not desiring birth [in the] Western [Pure Land], how can they be not abandoning that and seeking this?

若云彼此两无所求,是执断见矣。若云彼此两无所舍,是执常见矣。

If saying [with] that [and] this, both without those sought, [this] is attachment [to] nihilism’s view. If saying [with] that [and] this, both without those abandoned, [this] is attachment [to] eternalism’s view.

《维摩经》云:「虽知诸佛国,及与众生空,而常修净土,教化诸群生。」故虽炽然往生,不碍无生之理。

[The] Vimalakīrti Sūtra says, ‘Although knowing all Buddha lands, and together with sentient beings [are] empty, yet constantly cultivating [the] Pure Land [path, to] teach [and] transform all living beings.’ Thus, although clearly [with] rebirth [in Pure Land, this does] not obstruct [the] principle of non-birth.

[2] 至于心净佛土净之说,有 [i] 理有 [ii] 事。

[2] As for speaking of ‘[With the] mind pure [is the] Buddha land pure’, [this] has [i] principle [and] has [ii] practice.

[i] 若言乎理,何见求生者之心必非净,而不求生者之心反为净耶?

[i] If speaking of principle, why see [the] minds of those seeking birth [as] definitely not pure, yet [see the] minds of those not seeking birth instead as pure?

[ii] 若言乎事,与其净此心常居五浊恶世,何如净此心以居极乐莲邦耶?况居浊世者之求净而不净,在莲邦者之不求净而自净耶?

[ii] If speaking of practice, with those purifying their minds, constantly dwelling [in these] five defilements’ evil period’s [world], how [is this] better [than] purifying this mind, with dwelling [in the] Ultimate Bliss’ Lotus Land? Moreover, [with] those dwelling [in this] defiled world, then seeking purification, yet not purified, [while] those in [the] Lotus Land not seeking purification, yet naturally purified?
