第一疑
[1] [The] First Doubt
[为何求生净土?]
[Why Seek Birth In Pure Land?]
问:诸佛菩萨,以大悲为业,若欲救度众生,只应愿生三界,于五浊三途中,救苦众生。因何求生净土,专为自利,舍离众生?毋乃阙大慈悲,障菩提道耶?
Question: [As] all Buddhas [and] Bodhisattvas [are] with great compassion for [their] actions, if desiring [to] save [and] deliver sentient beings, [there] only should [be] aspiring [to be] born [in the] three realms, within [the] five defilements’ three paths, [to] save suffering sentient beings. [For] what cause seek birth [in] Pure Land, [with] focus for self-benefits, abandon [and] depart [from] sentient beings? [Is this] not thus deficient [in] great loving-kindness [and] compassion, [which] obstructs [the] Bodhi path?
答:菩萨有二种:[1] 一、久修行菩萨,已曾亲近诸佛,证得无生法忍者。[2] 二、初发心菩萨,未尝亲近诸佛,未得无生法忍者。
Answer: Bodhisattvas have two kinds. [1] First, [are] those long cultivating Bodhisattvas, [who] already previously got close [to] many Buddhas, realised [and] attained Non-Birth [Of] Dharmas’ Forbearance. [2] Second, [are] Bodhisattvas [who have] first given rise [to] aspiration, not yet got close [to] many Buddhas, [and] yet [to] attain Non-Birth [Of] Dharmas’ Forbearance.
[1] 久修行菩萨,有大神通,有大威力,故能为天为仙,为帝为王,为鬼为畜,出入生死,广度众生。
[1] Long cultivating Bodhisattvas have great supernormal [powers, and] have great mighty power, thus able [to] be heavenly [beings and] heavenly deities, be emperors [and] be kings, be ghosts [and] be animals, exiting [and] entering births [and] deaths, [to] widely deliver sentient beings.

[2] 若初修行人,力量浅薄,虽发菩提之心,犹住凡夫之地,自疾不能救,焉能救他人?故《智度论》云:「具缚凡夫,有大悲心,愿生浊世,救苦众生者,无有是处。」
[2] If beginner cultivators, [with] power superficial, although [having] given rise [to the] mind of Bodhi, [are] still abiding [on the] ground of ordinary beings. Personally [with] sickness not able [to be] saved [from], how [are they] able [to] save other persons? Thus, [the] Perfection [Of] Wisdom Treatise says, ‘[Of] those completely bound ordinary beings, [who] have great compassion’s mind, aspiring [to be] born [in] defiled lands, [to] save suffering sentient beings, [this] is without possibility.’
何以故?五浊世中,声色货利,刻刻纠缠,烦恼怨家,重重密布,略一失足,便成堕落。
Why thus? Within [this] five defilements’ world, [with] sounds [and] forms, goods [and] profits, [from] moment [to] moment entangled, [by] afflictions [and] enemies, layer upon layer densely covered, slightly once losing footing, then becoming [the] fallen.
纵使得生人中,难逢有佛之世。纵使有佛出世,难生信向之心。
Even if attaining birth within humans, [it is] difficult [to] encounter [a] world that has [a] Buddha. Even if having [a] Buddha arising [in the] world, [it is] difficult [to] give rise [to the] mind that [has] faith’s direction.
幸而信向佛乘,修行出家,转生若遇大富大贵,未免耽著尘缘,广造众恶。从此一失人身,何时更当解脱?
Fortunately [with] faith’s direction [towards the] Buddha Vehicle, cultivating [as those who have] left [the] household [life, when] reborn, if encountering great wealth [and] great honour, unavoidably indulging [in] attachment to [the] dusts’ conditions [i.e. worldly affinities], [to] widely create evil karmas. From this, once losing [the] human body, when again will [there be] liberation?
所以有智慧人,将欲度生,先求见佛。果能一心不乱,念佛往生,业已为金刚不坏之身,然后可行随类度生之愿。
Therefore, people [who] have wisdom, [who] plan to deliver beings, first seek [to] see [the] Buddha. If able [to be] wholehearted without [being] scattered, [with] mindfulness [of Āmítuó]fó reborn, already because of [having the] body of vajra indestructible, [they] can afterwards practise vows that accord [to their] types, [to] deliver beings.
[1] 譬如救溺,须自乘舟筏,方能引人出水。[2] 若徒从井救人,未有不与之俱溺者。非阙慈悲也,正善用其慈悲也。
[1] For example, like saving [those] drowning, [there] must [be] personally riding [a] raft, then able [to] guide others out [of the] water. [2] If in vain jumping into [a] well [to] save others, yet [to] have those not with them together drowning. [This is] not deficient [in] loving-kindness [and] compassion, [but] right [and] good use [of] those loving-kindness [and] compassion.
