[4] [The] Fourth Doubt
[为何偏念阿弥陀佛?]
[Why Be Particularly Mindful Of Āmítuófó?]
问:十方佛土,无量无边,随念一佛,皆得往生。何为偏念阿弥陀佛?
Question: [As the] ten directions’ Buddha lands [are] immeasurable [and] boundless, accordingly [with] mindfulness [of] one Buddha, all [can] attain rebirth [there], why [be] particularly mindful [of] Āmítuófó?
答:有三因缘:
Answer: [There] are three causes [and] conditions.
[1] 一、阿弥陀佛与娑婆世界有缘故。无量劫前,发四十八种誓愿,皆欲接引念佛众生,故今娑婆世界人,信口念佛,必称阿弥陀。
[1] First, Āmítuófó with [this] Sahā World has affinity thus. Immeasurable kalpas ago, [he] gave rise [to] forty-eight kinds [of] vows, [with] all desiring [to] receive [and] guide sentient beings [with] mindfulness [of] Buddha. Thus now, [this] Sahā World’s people, speaking without thinking [when] mindful [of] Buddha, will recite Āmítuófó.
将来众生福薄,法欲灭时,诸经皆去,独有《阿弥陀经》迟去百年,非其验何?
[As for] future sentient beings, [with] blessings thin, when [the] Dharma [is] about [to be] eliminated, [with] all sūtras all departed, there is only [the Larger Version Of The] Amitā[bha] Sūtra《大本阿弥陀经》[i.e. Immeasurable Life Sūtra《无量寿经》] departing [a] hundred years later, how [is this] not its proof?
[2] 二、因本师释迦如来指示故。三藏十二部经,所说甚广,独有持名一法,不念他佛,但念阿弥陀,苟非至切至要,胡为再四谆谆?
[2] Second, because [of our] Fundamental Teacher Śākya[muni] Thus Come [One] pointing [out and] teaching thus. [Although the] Three Treasuries’ Twelve Divisions’ sūtras’ those said [are] extremely vast, [they] only have upholding [of the Buddha’s] name’s one Dharma [Door, that is] not [with] mindfulness [of] other Buddhas, only [with] mindfulness [of] Āmítuófó. If [this is] not utmost sincere [and] utmost essential, why [is it] over and over again earnestly [taught]?
[3] 三、因十方诸佛皆作证明故。盖净土法门,系难信之法,故世尊每说阿弥陀佛,即有十方如来共作证明,以见不可不信。然则欲修净业者,安得不专念弥陀哉?
[3] Third, because [the] ten directions’ all Buddhas all bear witness [and] confirm thus. Because [the] Pure Land Dharma Door [is] connected [to being] that Dharma [Door] difficult [to] believe, thus [with the] World-Honoured [One], every [time] speaking [about] Āmítuófó, then having [the] ten directions’ Thus Come [Ones] together bearing witness [and] confirming. With [this, it can be] seen, [that it] must not [be] not believed. Then, [of] those desiring [to] cultivate pure karmas, how can they not [have] focused mindfulness [of] Āmítuófó?
