Coriander [Is] Not One Of The Five Pungent Roots
(5) [Of the] five pungent [roots] [五辛], our country [i.e. China] only has four, then [being] [1] onion [or chive], [2] leek, [3] shallot [or scallion] [and] [4] garlic.
Shallot then [is] small garlic. [i.e. These five are of the allium family (葱属).]
[The] Western Regions [i.e. including India] have [5] hiṅgu [i.e. hing or asafoetida], [while] our country [is] without this one kind.
[There] are [those] with coriander as one of those five pungent [roots. [This is] thus [by] external paths, those established only.
[Note: Coriander is a common and allowable garnishing green in Chinese dishes. There are also misconceptions that Buddhists are not supposed to consume ginger (姜) and chilli (辣椒). However, both are not of the allium family above.]
