[313] Due [To] Curing Physical Sicknesses, Then Healing Mental Sicknesses
[The] Buddha is [the] Great Healing King, [who] universally cures sentient beings’ physical, mental [and] other sicknesses.
[The] world’s doctors, [are] only able [to] cure [the] body, even if [with] ‘setting out becoming spring’ [i.e. seemingly able to ‘restore’ life], [for] examining of those persons’ consciousnesses’ outcomes, [they are] completely without those benefitted.
[Note 1: Of course, proper medical advice should also be responsibly and reasonably (but not overly) sought for care when sick, to expedite healing, unless confirmed to be unnecessary or too late.]
You, [having] already taken refuge [in the] Triple Gem, [and] given rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, for others curing sicknesses, then when curing physical sicknesses, [should] simultaneously dwell [in] curing mental sicknesses’ methods. Why say this?
All [with those] belonging [to] dangerous great sicknesses, [are] mostly due [to] past lives’ [and the] present life’s killing karmas then obtained.
Then, those people having [these] sicknesses, must sever [from] sexual intercourse. Then can [they] quickly heal.
Desiring [to] eliminate past [and] present killing karmas, [they] must abstain [from] killing [and] eat [as] veg[etari]ans. Also again, [with] utmost sincere mindfulness [of the] Buddha[’s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], and mindfulness [of] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [Bodhisattva’s name] [i.e. Guānshìyīn Púsà (观世音菩萨)], then can [there] definitely [be] quick healing, moreover able [to] cultivate virtues and plant good roots.
[Note 2: For practice, mindfulness of Āmítuófó’s name will do for healing, as he already is the ‘Unsurpassable King Of Healers’ (无上大医王), although those who habitually associate Guānshìyīn Bodhisattva more with healing can practise with her name too.]
[Note 3: See too, the first Related Article below, on the need to shift priorities to aspire only for reaching Pure Land if severely sick, to the point of possibly already dying. See too, the second Related Article on when it is best to only practise mindfulness of Āmítuófó’s name, with the straightforward mind.]
If resenting karmic sicknesses, [yet] eliminating these curing methods [above, it will] definitely [be] difficult [to have] complete healing.
These people, with their families’ fathers [and] mothers, wives [and] children, hoping [for] healing [with] minds anxious, not necessarily [will] not [be] willing [to] comply.
If willing [to] comply, thus then planting world-transcending good roots. From this giving rise [to the] right faithful mind, later perhaps due [to] this, liberating [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, transcending [the] ordinary [to] enter [the] noble. Then, for them [and] for you, all [will] have great benefits.
As for severing desires, [this] one practice, [they] should [be] with [it] as [the] foremost essential Dharma [Door for] curing sicknesses. Regardless [of] inner illnesses [or] outer illnesses, [with] sicknesses yet [to be] fully recovered [from, there] absolutely must not [be] contamination [and] defilement [by having] sexual intercourse.
([As the] ‘First Compilation’s Collected Writings’ Longevity [And] Health’s Treasure Mirror’s Preface’s text, focuses [on] curing these sicknesses, [there] should [be] detailed reading [of] it. [By the] editor respectfully annotated.)
Once defiled [by] sexual intercourse, small sicknesses [can] become great, [and] great sicknesses [can] perhaps lead [to] immediate death. Perhaps not immediately dying, already planting [the] cause of definite death. Desiring them [to] not die, [is] also extremely difficult, extremely difficult.
Even if not dying, perhaps becoming weak [and] useless persons, [with] definite difficulties [of] preserving their health. Not knowing themselves [to be] not good [at] gathering nutrition, instead saying doctors [are] without true skills.
Regardless [of] men [or] women ([for] virgins [and] widows, not suitable [for] speaking, [with] others together without obstruction), [to] all, [there] should [be, with] composed fervour [and] assurance, truthfully speaking [on the] benefits [and] harms, so that their sicknesses [can] easily heal. Then, your fame [will] also because [of] this, then [become] clear.
Often, doctors only knowing [about] curing sicknesses, [do] not speak [of] sicknesses’ prohibitions, moreover [with] willingness [to] lead others [to] correct faults [and] change [to do] good, with cultivation [of] virtues [and] accumulation [of] blessings?
This is carrying [goods for] trading, [the] mental activities of merchants, only [for] profit having scheming, not [the] mental activities of [those] benefitting [the] world [and] aiding people.
Moreover, [if] able [to] lead people, because [of] sicknesses, [to] then attain birth [to] enter [the] region of noble [and] virtuous [ones, at] the end, [to] return [to the] unsurpassable benefits [of the] country [of] Ultimate Bliss?
Ancient persons say, ‘[If] not as [a] good prime minister, definitely as [a] good doctor.’ Therefore, [those] called doctors [are] called great national talents.
[With] fame of [the] world’s doctors already utmost high, if simultaneously with [the] Buddha’s teachings, then thereby with [this] delivering sentient beings, practising [the] Bodhisattva path, [this] truly is [the] most essential of all occupations.
With people when in sicknesses, attaining hearing [of] that spoken [by] doctors, [who do] not focus [on] seeking profit, [who] aspire [and] hope [to] benefit others, [and have] given rise [to] Bodhi Mind, [they are] definitely able [to] cause [their] sicknesses [to] then heal, personally not [be] able [to] not give rise [to] right faith [to] accordingly practise.
Desiring people [to] obtain trust, [there] absolutely must not [be with] calculating [of] gifts as thanks’ amounts, then giving rise [to] differentiation. If [for] those rich, earnest as doctors, [and for] those poor, only dealt with [for] getting over [their] matters, over a long time, people [will] all [be] with [them] making profit then slight them. Then [with] those words that [are] spoken [to] benefit people, people also [will] not believe [and] follow [them].
Also, [there] must [be, when] meeting fathers, speaking [on] loving-kindness, meeting children, speaking [on] filiality, [to] elder brothers [and sisters on] affection, [to] younger brothers [and sisters on] respect, [to] husbands [on] harmony, [to] wives [on] agreeability, [to] masters [on] benevolence, [and to] servants [on] loyalty. And [on] cause [and] effect’s retribution [and rewards], that connect [the] three periods (past, present [and] future), [with] births [and] deaths [in] rebirth, that go through [the] six paths.
[Note 4: Six paths (六道): (i) hell path (地狱道), (ii) hungry ghost path (饿鬼道), (iii) animal path (畜生道), (iv) human path (人道), (v) asura path (阿修罗道), (vi) heavenly path (天道).]
[If there are] those [who] can [be] spoken [to], there is no harm, with having intentions starting chats that [are] without intentions, [to] enable hearers [to] gradually open up [their] mind grounds. [To] know that births [and] deaths [in] rebirth [are] dreadful, [and how] fortunate [it is, that there] is [a] Dharma [Door for] liberating [from the cycle of] birth [and] death. Those able [to do] thus, truly can [be] called, ‘Immediately [with] worldly Dharma, with practice [of the] Buddha’s teachings, due [to] curing physical sicknesses, then healing mental sicknesses.’
