守贞修行，当须努力
[314] [Those] Guarding Chastity [For] Cultivating Practice Must Strive Hard
一切众生，从淫欲而生。
All sentient beings, [are] from lustful desires then born.
汝发心守贞修行，当须努力。
[As] you [have] given rise [to the] mind [to] guard [your] chastity [for] cultivating practice, [you] must strive hard.
[Note 1: The practice of guarding chastity is to abstain from premarital and extramarital sex, or from all sex.]
倘有此等情念起，当思地狱刀山剑树、镬汤炉炭种种之苦，自然种种念起，立刻消灭。
If [there] is this kind [of] passionate thoughts arising, [you] should think [of] all kinds of suffering, [of the] hells’ knife mountains [and] sword trees, cauldrons’ hot water [and] furnaces’ coal. Naturally, all kinds [of these] thoughts arisen, [will] immediately [be] eliminated.
[Note 2: Severe breaking of the Third Precept (against sexual misconduct) can lead to fall into the hells.]
每见多少善女，始则发心守贞不嫁，继则情念一起，力不能胜，遂与人作苟且之事。
Often seen [are] many young good women, [in the] beginning then giving rise [to the] mind [to] guard chastity [and] not marry, afterwards then, [with] passionate thoughts once arising, [with their] strength not able [to] surpass [them], thereupon with others doing those improper matters.
而一经破守，如水溃堤，从兹横流，永不能归于正道，实可痛惜！
And once going through breaking [of] defence, like water breaking through dikes, from this overflowing, long not able [to] return to [the] right path, how truly lamentable!
当自斟酌，能守得牢则好极。
[You] should personally consider [this, to be] able [to] guard [yourself] securely. Then [is this] extremely good.
否则出嫁从夫，乃天地圣人与人所立之纲常，固非不可也。
Otherwise, [as] getting married [and] following [your] husband, thus [are with the] heavens [and] earth’s noble persons and humans those established guiding [principles and] constant [regulations, this is] certainly not [what] cannot [be done].
