[315] That Which Vegetarians Should Eat More 素食者所宜多吃

欲靠食物滋养,食素人宜多吃麦。

Desiring [to] depend [on] food [for] nourishment, people eating [as] veg[etari]ans should eat more wheat [小麦], [barley (大麦) and oats (燕麦)].

食麦之力,大于米力,不止数倍。光吃了面食,则精神健旺,气力充足,音声高大。米则只可饱腹,无此效力。

That strength [from] eating wheat, [is] greater than rice’s strength, not only [by] several times. [Yìn]guāng [印光], having eaten foods made from wheat flour, then [is with] vigour robust, strength abundant, voice high [and] loud. [As] rice then, only can fill [the] belly, [it is] without these effects.

麦比参力,尚高数倍。

Wheat, compared [with] ginseng’s strength, [is] still higher [by] several times.

大磨麻油,亦补人。小磨麻油,以炒焦枯了,力道退半。人但知香,实则是焦味耳。

Large milled sesame oil, also [can be for] people’s supplementing. Small milled sesame oil, with frying scorched completely, [its] strength [is] faded [by] half. People only know [its] ‘fragrance’, [but it] actually is [a] burnt smell only.

([As] soy beans [and] soy bean oil [are with] supplementary contents [the] most, those [are] suitable [for] eating often. See ‘Second Compilation’s Reply Letter [To] Bào Héngshì’)

莲子、桂圆、红枣、芡实、薏米,皆可滋补。

Lotus seeds, longans, red dates, Gorgon fruits [i.e. Euryale seed] [and] Job’s tears, all can [be] nourishing.

岂必须血肉,方能滋补乎?总之皆不如麦之力大。

How can [it be that there] must [be with] blood [and] flesh, then able [to be] nourishing? Overall [then speaking on] this, all [are] not as good as [the] great strength of wheat.
