[326] Layperson Zhōu Ānshì’s Worldly And World-Transcending Good Books 周安士居士之世出世善书

《安士全书》,觉世牖民,尽善尽美。讲道论德,越古超今。言简而该,理深而著。

‘Ānshì’s Complete Book’, [for] awakening [the] world [and] inspiring people, [is] utmost complete [and] utmost perfect. Speaking [of the] path [and] discussing virtues, transcending [the] ancient [and] surpassing [the] modern. [With] words concise yet comprehensive, principles profound yet shown.

引事迹则证据的确,发议论则洞彻渊源。诚传家之至宝,亦宣讲之奇书。

Citing deeds then [as] proof irrefutable, offering explanations then [for] understanding thoroughly [their] origins. [It is] truly that most valuable treasure [for] passing on through the generations, also [a] rare [and] outstanding book [for] instructions.

言言皆佛祖之心法,圣贤之道脉。淑世善民之要道,光前裕后之秘方。

[With] word [after] word all [like the] heart teachings of [the] Buddhas [and] Patriarchs, [the] path’s vein of noble [and] virtuous [ones. It has the] essential path of helping [the] world [with] good [for the] people, [and the] secret recipe of honouring [those] before [and] benefitting [those] after.

若能依而行之,则绳武圣贤,了生脱死,若操左券以取故物。与彼世所流通善书,不啻有山垤海潦之异。

If able [to] rely [on] this and practise, then following footprints [of] noble [and] virtuous [ones, for] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, [this is] like holding [the] left contract [i.e. guarantee], with [it] obtaining [a] former object. With those other virtuous books circulated [in the] world, not only having [the] differences of [a] mountain [and a] hill, [the] ocean [and a] puddle.

安士先生,姓周,名梦颜,一名思仁,江苏昆山诸生也。博通三教经书,深信念佛法门。

Mister Ānshì’s surname [is] Zhōu, [with his] name Mèngyán, [and] other name Sīrén, [was] Jiāngsū [Province’s] Kūnshān [City’s] Zhūshēng [i.e. imperial scholar]. [He was] extensively proficient [with the] three teachings’ scriptural books [i.e. of Buddhism (佛教), Taoism (道教) and Confucianism (儒教)], [with] profound Faith [in the] Dharma Door [Of] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha.

弱冠入泮,遂厌仕进。发菩提心,著书觉民。欲令斯民先立于无过之地,后出乎生死之海。故著戒杀之书曰《万善先资》,戒淫之书曰《欲海回狂》。良以众生造业,唯此二者最多,改过亦唯此二者最要。

[At the age of] twenty entering [the] palace academy, [he] thereupon disliked official advancement. [He] gave rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, [and] wrote books [to] awaken people. Desiring [to] lead these people [to] first [be] established on [the] ground of faultlessness, later [for] going beyond [the] ocean of birth [and] death, [he] thus wrote that book [on] abstaining [from] killing called ‘[The] Ten Thousand Goodnesses’ First Provision’, [and] that book [on] abstaining [from] sex[ual misconduct] called ‘[From] Desires’ Ocean Returning [From] Madness’. [This is] really because [of] sentient beings’ created [evil] karmas, [as] only these two [are the] most many, correcting [of] faults [is] also only [with] these two [as the] most important.

又著《阴骘文广义》,直将垂训之心,彻底掀翻,和盘托出。使千古之上,千古之下,垂训受训,两无遗憾矣。

[He] also wrote ‘Hidden Good Deeds’ Text’s General Meanings’, directly using [it for] handing down teachings of [Lord Wénchāng’s] [文昌帝君] mind, thoroughly turning [them] over, ‘together with [the] tray held out with his hands’. Enabling those [a] thousand ages above, [to] those [a] thousand ages below, [to] hand down teachings [and] receive teachings, [with] both without regrets.

以其奇才妙悟,取佛祖圣贤幽微奥妙之义,而以世间事迹文字发挥之,使雅俗同观,智愚共晓。

With his extraordinary talents [and] wonderful awakening, obtaining those Buddhas [and] Patriarchs’, noble [and] virtuous [ones’] refined [and] subtle, profound [and] wonderful meanings, then with [the] world’s deeds [in] writing brought out, enabling [the] refined [and] common [to] similarly contemplate, [for the] wise [and] foolish [to] together know [them].

又著《西归直指》一书,明念佛求生西方,了生脱死大事。

[He] also wrote ‘Western Return’s Direct Pointers’, [this] one book, [to] explain mindfulness [of] Buddha [for] seeking birth [in his] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss] [西方极乐世界], [for] liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death’s great matter.

良以积德修善,只得人天之福,福尽还须堕落。念佛往生,便入菩萨之位,决定直成佛道。

[This is] really because [with] accumulating [of] virtues [and] cultivating [of] good, only attaining blessings of human [and] heavenly [beings, with these] blessings exhausted, [there] still must [be] falling. [With] mindfulness [of] Buddha reborn [in his Pure Land] [净土], then entering positions of Bodhisattvas, definitely [and] directly accomplishing [the] Buddha path.

前三种书,虽教人修世善,而亦具了生死法。此一种书,虽教人了生死,而又须力行世善。

[The] previous three kinds [of] books, although teaching people [to] cultivate worldly good, yet also possess liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death’s method. This one kind [of] book, although teaching people [to be] liberated [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, yet [they] also must diligently practise worldly good.

诚可谓现居士身,说法度生者。不谓之菩萨再来,吾不信也。

[He] truly can [be] called that appearing [with a] layperson’s body, speaking [the] Dharma [to] deliver [sentient] beings. [If] not calling him [a] Bodhisattva [who] again came, I [do] not believe [this].
