[311] Who Can Be Called ‘Hair-Wearing High Monastics’?

[The] Thus Come [One] spoke [the] Dharma, [which] constantly accorded [with] sentient beings. [When] meeting fathers, speaking [on] loving-kindness. [When] meeting children, speaking [on] filial piety.

[Those] externally [doing their] utmost [in] human relations, [and] internally eliminating [false] emotions [and] thoughts, [to] enable return [to their] originally possessed true minds, are named as [the] Buddha’s disciples. How can this be [with] two strands [of] head hairs above [or not] discussed?

[Note: Whether one is a true Buddha’s disciple or not, does not depend on one’s head being shaven to be a monastic or not; but on whether one practises the Dharma sincerely and accordingly or not.]

Relying on this good mind, do the utmost [to] learn [the] path. [With] filial piety [and] brotherly fraternity cultivated, then [with the] village touched [and] transformed. [With the] Purification Precepts established, then [with] killing [and] stealing secretly eliminated.

Study [the] Pure Land sūtras [and] commentaries, [to] then know [the] essential path of exiting suffering. Receive [and] uphold ‘Ānshì’s Complete Book’, [to] then know [the] good plan of aiding [the] world. With [the] Pure Land Dharma Door instruct parents, [and] with [the] Pure Land Dharma Door teach children, all relatives [and] friends.

[It is] precisely with [liberation from the cycle of] birth [and] death’s matter [being] great, [that there] should [be] deep [and] painstaking sympathy [for] my future. [There] need not [be] choosing [of] another place, [as] then [in the] family, [this] exactly is [the] place [for (learning, practising and) realising the] path. With fathers [and] mothers, brothers [and sisters], wives [and] children, friends [and] relatives, completely becoming Dharma family members.

[With] personal practice transforming others, [the] mouth encouraging, [and the] body leading, enabling [them to] together return [to the] pure region [i.e. Pure Land (净土)], [to] completely exit suffering’s wheel, [these] can [be] called [as] ‘hair-wearing high monastics’, [the] Buddha’s house-dwelling disciples.
