[328] From History Know Causes [And] Effects’ Rewards [And] Retribution’s Responses
《历史统纪》一书，无论信佛谤佛者，皆肯看。
[On] ‘History’s Essential Records’, [this] one book, regardless [of] those [who have] faith [in the] Buddha [or those who have] slandered [the] Buddha, all [are] willing [to] read [it].
以其是史鉴中事（余劝其遍阅二十四史，择其因果报应之显著者，录为一书。见《续编·历史感应统纪序》），较之一切善书，为得实益，为最切要。
With it are matters within historical records. (Other [than] encouraging it [to be] completely read [on the] twenty-four [dynasties’] histories, select those significant causes [and] effects’ rewards [and] retribution’s responses, [to be] recorded as one book. See ‘Second Compilation’s History’s Connections [With] Responses’ Essential Records’ Preface’). Comparing it [with] all good[-encouraging] books, for attaining true benefits, [it] is [that] most definite [and] to the point.
