[302] With Molten Gold Entering Moulds, Accordingly Becoming Vessels 熔金入模,随之成器

教子女,当于根本上着手。所谓根本者,即孝亲济众、忍辱笃行。以身为教,以德为范。

[When] teaching sons [and daughters, [there] should [be] from [the] roots first starting. Those so-called roots, [are] then [being] filial [to] parents [and offering] aid [to] all, [with] patience practising [these] sincerely. [Be] with [being] examples for teaching, [and] with [being] virtuous for modelling.

如熔金铜,倾入模中。模直则直,模曲则曲。大小厚薄,未入模之先,已可预知,况出模乎。

Like [with] molten gold [and] copper, poured [to] enter [a] mould within. [With the] mould straight then straightened, [with the] mould curved then curved. [That] big [or] small, thick [or] thin, [when] yet [to] enter [the] mould, before that, already can in advance [be] known, moreover [when] out [of the] mould.

近世人情,多不知此。故一班有天姿子弟,多分狂悖。无天姿者,复归顽劣。

[In these] modern times, [on] human [nature’s] principles, [there are] many not knowing these. Thus generally, [those of] later generations [who] have natural talents, [are] mostly arrogant [and] contradict reason. Those without natural talents, [will] again return [to be] stubborn [and] disobedient.

以于幼时失其范围,如熔金倾入坏模,则成坏器。金固一也,而器则天渊悬殊矣。

With when young losing their boundaries [i.e. rules], [this is] like [having] molten gold poured [to] enter spoilt moulds, then becoming spoilt vessels. [The] gold originally [is] one, yet [with its] vessels, [they are] then [like the] sky [and the] abyss, far apart.
