[245] What Is ‘With Chán And With Pure Land Practices’?

That ‘Chán’ [is] the same as [the] True Thusness’ Buddha-nature that we originally possess, [the] Chán Door’s so-called ‘original face before [our] fathers [and] mothers [are] yet [to be] born.’ [As the] Chán Door’s words [do] not speak [to] reveal [it], leading people contemplating [to] then personally attain [it], thus [are] those words like this.

[Note 1: These teachings are on ‘Chán And Pure Land’s Fourfold Explanations’ 《禅净四料简》: https://purelanders.com/2009/12/15/brief-on-four-categories, especially the titular line in it.]

[It] actually [is] the same as [what is] without [that] able [to transform (i.e. active) and] without [that] transformable [i.e. passive], the same as [what is] still and illuminating, that [is] departed [from] thought’s spiritual knowledge, [the] pure [and] true mind essence. (That ‘departed [from] thought’s spiritual knowledge’, [is] completely without thoughts [and] thinking, yet clearly understanding [those] faced circumstances.)

That ‘Pure Land’ [is] the same as [with] Faith [and] Aspiration upholding [the Buddha’s] name [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], [for] seeking birth [in his] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (西方极乐世界), which is] not partial [to] referring [to] mind-only Pure Land [and] self-nature’s [Ā]mítuó[fó].

Those ‘with Chán’ [are] the same as [those with] contemplative investigation’s efforts utmost, [with] thoughts stilled [and] passions exhausted, completely seeing [their] ‘original face before [our] fathers [and] mothers [are] yet [to be] born’, understanding [their] minds [and] seeing [their] nature.

Those ‘with Pure Land [practices’, are] the same as [those who] truly give rise [to the] Bodhi Mind, give rise [to] Faith [and] give rise [to] Aspiration, [to] uphold [the] Buddha’s name, [for] seeking birth [in his] Western [Pure Land].

‘Chán’ and ‘Pure Land’, [are] only restricted [to the] teachings [and] restricted [to the] principles. ‘With Chán [and] with Pure Land [practices’, are] thus restricted [to] capacities [and] restricted [to] cultivation.

[The] teachings [and] principles [are] then constantly thus, [which the] Buddhas [are] not able [to] increase, [and] all [are] not able [to] decrease. [The] capacities [and] cultivation must rely [on the] teachings [to] give rise [to] practices, [with] practices utmost realising [the] principles, enabling that [fruit] truly possessed [by] all [in] ourselves [to be attained].

Those two lines, although similar, [are] truly [with] great differences. [There] must [be] careful [and] deliberate examination, [that] must not [be done] generally.

If contemplating Chán, [then] yet [to] awaken, or [having] awakening, then yet [to be] complete, all cannot [be] named as ‘with Chán’.

If mindful [of the] Buddha [with] partial attachment [to] mind-only, then without Faith [and] Aspiration. Perhaps having Faith [and] Aspiration, yet not truly sincere; leisurely, superficially [and] perfunctorily thus practising. Perhaps [having] practice, although diligent, [with the] mind attached [to the] dusts’ realms. Perhaps seeking future lives’ births [in] wealthy [and] honoured families, [to] enjoy [the] five desires’ joys. Perhaps seeking birth [in the] heavens, [to] receive heavenly blessings’ joys. Perhaps seeking future lives’ leaving [of the] household [life to] be monastics, [who] once hear [the Dharma, have a] thousand awakenings, attain great total retention, [to] propagate [the] Dharma’s path, [for] universally benefitting sentient beings, all [these] cannot [be] named as ‘with Pure Land [practices]’.

[Note 2: The Five Desires (五欲) are for (i) wealth, (ii) sex, (iii) fame, (iv) food and (v) sleep (财色名食睡).]
