[26] With Ordinary Beings’ Minds, Thrown Into The Buddha’s Awakening’s Ocean 以凡夫心,投佛觉海

其余法门,小法则大根不须修,大法则小根不能修。唯兹净土一门,三根普被,利钝全收。

[As] those other Dharma Doors, [are with the] Small [Vehicle’s] Dharma [Doors], then [those with] great roots [do] not need [to] cultivate [them. With the] Great [Vehicle’s] Dharma [Doors], then [those with] small roots [are] not able [to] cultivate [them]. Only this Pure Land, [this] one [Dharma] Door, [is with the] three roots universally covered, [the] sharp [and] dull completely gathered.

[Note 1: The Small Vehicle (小乘) has the Small Dharma (小法) for self-deliverance (自度) for those with small roots (小根) (or spiritual capacity for it), while the Great Vehicle (大乘) has the Great Dharma (大法) for self-deliverance and deliverance of others (自度度他) for those with great roots (大根).

As those with great roots surpass those with small roots, they need not focus on the Small Dharma. As those with small roots are not ready for the Great Dharma, they are not able to cultivate it yet, although they can begin to learn it, if willing to do so.

The Pure Land Dharma Door (净土法门) is suitable for all beings as it covers those of the three roots (三根), which are the high roots (上根), medium roots (中根) and low roots (下根), with the high roots belonging to those sharp (利), and the low roots belonging to those dull (钝).]

上之,则观音、势至、文殊、普贤,不能超出其外。下之,则五逆十恶、阿鼻种性,亦可预入其中。

[Of] those high, then [are] Contemplator [Of The World’s] Sounds [Bodhisattva] [观世音菩萨], [Great] Power Arrived [Bodhisattva] [大势至菩萨], Mañjuśrī [Bodhisattva] [文殊师利菩萨] [and] Universal Virtue [Bodhisattva] [普贤菩萨], not able [to] transcend [to] it outside. [Of] those low, then [those with the] five heinous [transgressions] [五逆罪], ten evil [karmas (十恶业) and] Avīci [Hell’s] [阿鼻地狱] seed-nature, also can participate [and] enter within it.

[Note 2: Five Heinous Transgressions (五逆罪):

(i) killing of father (杀父)
(ii) killing of mother (杀母)
(iii) killing of Arhat (杀阿罗汉)
(iv) causing Buddha’s body to bleed (出佛身血)
(v) breaking up the harmonious Saṃgha (破和合僧)]

[Note 3: Ten Evil Karmas (十恶业):

(1) Killing lives (杀生)
(2) Stealing (偷盗)
(3) Sexual misconduct (邪淫)
(4) False speech (妄语)
(5) Double-tongued speech (两舌)
(6) Abusive speech (恶口)
(7) Frivolous speech (绮语)
(8) Greedy desires (贪欲)
(9) Anger (嗔恚)
(10) False views (邪见)]

使如来不开此法,则末世众生,欲即生了生脱死,便绝无企望矣。

If [the] Thus Come [One did] not teach this Dharma [Door], then [will this Dharma-]Ending Age’s sentient beings, [who] desire [to, in this] immediate life [be] liberated [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, then absolutely [be] without [it] to hope [for].

然此法门如是广大,而其修法又极简易。由此之故,非宿有净土善根者,便难谛信无疑。

However, [with] this Dharma Door thus vast [and] great, yet its cultivation method [is] also extremely easy. Due [to] this reason, those not [in the] past having Pure Land’s good roots, [are] then difficult [to] truly believe [it] without doubt.

不但凡夫不信,二乘犹多疑之。不但二乘不信,权位菩萨,犹或疑之。唯大乘深位菩萨,方能彻底了当,谛信无疑。

Not only [are there] ordinary beings [who do] not believe, [those of the] Two Vehicles also [have] many [who] doubt it. Not only [are there those of the] Two Vehicles [who do] not believe, [those of the] Provisional Positions’ Bodhisattvas, also perhaps [have those who] doubt it. Only [the] Great Vehicle’s Profound Positions’ Bodhisattvas, [are] then able [to] thoroughly [and] completely bear, [and] truly believe [it] without doubt.

[Note 4: Two Vehicles (二乘): Those aspiring for self-liberation as (i) Arhats (阿罗汉), by learning (and practising) the path through Buddhas and/or their recorded teachings, and (ii) Pratyekabuddhas (辟支佛), by awakening to the path through observing their minds and nature. The Two Vehicles are also form the Small Vehicle (小乘) as their goal is self-liberation, focused on delivering oneself.]

[Note 5: Provisional Positions’ Bodhisattvas (权位菩萨) are beginner Bodhisattvas Before Grounds (地前菩萨), yet to attain the Ten Grounds (十地). Profound Positions’ Bodhisattvas (深位菩萨) are advanced Bodhisattvas On Grounds And Above (地上菩萨), who have already attained the Ten Grounds (十地) or above.]

(良以此之法门,以果觉为因心,全体是佛境界。唯佛与佛,乃能究尽,非彼诸人智所能知故也。见《正编·龙舒净土文序》)

([It is] really because of this Dharma Door, [it is] with [the] effect’s [i.e. fruit’s] awakening as [the] causal mind, [that the] entire essence is [the] Buddha’s state. Only [a] Buddha with [another] Buddha, [are] thus able [to] examine [it] completely, not [with] all those persons’ wisdom, that able [to] know thus. 能于此法深生信心,虽是具缚凡夫,其种性已超二乘之上。由以信愿持佛名号,即能以凡夫心,投佛觉海,故得潜通佛智,暗合道妙也。

[If] able [to], in this Dharma [Door] deeply give rise [to the] faithful mind, although [they] are completely bound ordinary beings, their seed-nature already surpass [those] of [the] Two Vehicles [to be] those above. Due [to this], with Faith [and] Aspiration upholding [the] Buddha’s name [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], [is] immediately able [to be] with ordinary beings’ minds, thrown [into the] Buddha’s awakening’s ocean, thus attaining hidden connection [to the] Buddha’s wisdom, [and] secret unity [with the] path’s wonders.

欲说净土修法,若不略陈诸法仗自力了脱之难,此法仗佛力往生之易,则不是疑法,便是疑自。

Desiring [to] speak [of the] Pure Land cultivation method, if not briefly stating [the] difficulties of all Dharma [Doors] relying on Self-power [for] liberation, [and the] easiness of this Dharma [Door] relying [on the] Buddha’s power [for] rebirth [in his Pure Land], then [if] not doubting this Dharma [Door], then is [there] doubting [of] oneself.

若有丝毫疑心,则因疑成障。莫道不修,修亦不得究竟实益也。由是言之,信之一法,可不急急讲求,以期深造其极乎哉!

If having [the] slightest doubtful mind, then because [of] doubt becoming [a] obstacle. Do not speak [of those] not cultivating, [those] cultivating also [will] not attain [the] ultimate true benefits. Due [to] this saying that of Faith, [this] one Dharma, [how] can [there] not [be] urgent emphasis, with hope [of] deeply creating it [to the] utmost?
