古足偈
Verses On The Ancients’ Adequacy
佛已教尽，
祖亦解行。
正道既成，
以古为师。
The Buddha had already taught completely,
what the Patriarchs also explained for practice.
Since this right path had been formed,
be with the ancients as your teachers.
凡夫立异，
有弊无利。
画蛇添足，
道上失足。
Ordinary beings who establish the different,
create harms without benefits.
Those drawing ‘snakes’ yet adding legs,
will lose their footing on the path.
