Śākyamuni Buddha’s Prophecies On Nāgārjuna Bodhisattva
《摩诃摩耶经》卷下：
Mahāmāyā Sūtra’s Lower Scroll:
[阿难]: 我于往昔曾闻世尊说…「正法于此，便就灭尽。六百岁已，九十六种诸外道等，邪见竟兴，破灭佛法，有一比丘名曰马鸣，善说法要，降伏一切诸外道辈。
[Ānanda]: I in [the] past, once heard [the] World-Honoured [One (i.e. Śākyamuni Buddha)] say… ‘[When the] Right Dharma in this [world, is] then approaching complete destruction, six hundred years later, [when] all ninety-six kinds [of] external paths [and] others, [are with] evil views completely thriving, [there will] be one bhikṣu named Horse Neigh [(i.e. Aśvaghoṣa Bodhisattva), who can] skilfully speak [the] Dharma’s essence, [to] subdue all eternalist paths’ contemporaries.
七百岁已，有比丘名曰龙树，善说法要， 灭邪见幢，燃正法炬。」
Seven hundred years later, [there will] be [a] bhikṣu named Dragon Tree [(i.e. Nāgārjuna Bodhisattva), who] skilfully speaks [the] Dharma’s essence, [to] eradicate evil views’ pillars, [and] ignite [the] Right Dharma’s torch.’
《入楞伽经》第八卷：
Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra’s 8th Scroll:
大慧菩萨白佛言：「佛灭度后，是法何人受持？」
Great Wisdom [i.e. Mahāmati] Bodhisattva to [Śākyamuni] Buddha said, ‘After [the] Buddha [enters] parinirvāṇa, [of] this Dharma, which person [will be able to] receive [and] uphold [it, for learning, practice, realisation and teaching]?’
佛以偈答曰：「于我灭度后，南天竺大国，有大德比丘名龙树菩萨，住欢喜地，为人说法，能破有无见，往生安养国。」
[The] Buddha [with] verses answered, ‘Of my parinirvāṇa after, [in a] great country in Southern India, [there will] be [a] great virtuous bhikṣu named Dragon Tree [i.e. Nāgārjuna] Bodhisattva, [who] abides [on Bodhisattvas’ stage of the First] Ground [Of] Joy, for people speaking [the] Dharma, able [to] destroy views [of] existence [and] non-existence, [who will be] reborn [in the] Land [Of] Peaceful Nurturing [i.e. Amitābha Buddha’s Western Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss].’
