[285] Why Say People Who Seek The Future Life But Do Not Seek Rebirth In Pure Land Are The Transgressors Within The World’s Transgressors? 为什么说求来生不求往生的人是世间罪人之中之罪人?

[Why Is Breaking Right Views Worse Than Breaking Precepts?]

佛言世间有二罪人,一是破戒,二是破见。破戒之罪尚轻,破见之罪甚重。

[The] Buddha said [that] in [this] world, [there] are two [kinds of] transgressors. First, are [those who] break precepts. Second, are [those who] break [right] views. [The] transgression of breaking precepts [is] still [relatively] light[er, while the] transgression of breaking [right] views [is] extremely heavy.

[Note 1: Even though one transgression is relatively lighter than the other, there should be practice to create neither transgression.]

何谓破见,即如汝所说,求来生不求往生,乃是邪执谬见。

What [is] called [to] ‘break [right] views’? Such as that you [have] said, [to] seek [the] future life [but] not seek rebirth [in Pure Land (净土)], this is evil attachment [to a] wrong view.

[Note 2: Thus, to have and share the wrong view that it is better to seek any rebirth, including human or heavenly rebirth, than rebirth in Pure Land is worse than to break the precepts, although it is also breaking the Fourth Precept of communicating false speech (妄语), that contradicts the Buddha’s truths spoken.]

乃是破坏佛法之邪见,及引一切人起邪执谬见。其罪极大极重。以其心与佛相反,复能误一切人故也。

[This] thus is that evil view [which] destroys [the] Buddha’s Dharma, and [mis]guides all people [to] give rise [to] evil attachment [to this] wrong view. This transgression [is] extremely great [and] extremely heavy.  With this mind and [the] Buddha contradicting each other, repeatedly able [to] misguide all people thus.

[Note 3: Wrong views (谬见) should be renounced immediately when right views (正见) are learnt, sharing the latter with those whom wrong views were shared with previously, as practice of repentance (忏悔). If the above wrong view was once shared, this article which corrects it should be shared as remedial action. Such a wrong view can lead many to be trapped in the cycle of birth and death indefinitely, to not most swiftly progress towards Buddhahood via Āmítuófó’s (阿弥陀佛) Pure Land. While breaking precepts generally might harm some for a while, breaking right views can harm many for a long time. Thus is this transgression extremely great and heavy.]

[如何知道那些是该接受的教理?]
[How To Know Which Are The Right Teachings To Receive?]

我说这些话,汝且莫当造谣言骗汝。我要是骗汝,当有所为。我不为名利势力,平白骗汝一素不相识,只见一面之老太婆,岂不成了痴子呆子了么?

[With] my speaking [of] these words, you moreover [must] not [be with them] as creating [of] rumours [to] cheat you. [If] I want [to] cheat you, [I] will have that done, [but] I [am] not [doing this] for fame, benefits [and] power. [If in] ordinary days cheating you, a usually not acquainted [stranger], only [an] old woman who [was] once met, how can [I] not become [an] idiot [and] fool?

[Note 4: One of the ways to know if someone might be deceiving you with wrong teachings is to check if that person has any personal worldly benefits for doing so, such as those above.]

因为汝相信我,以我为师。汝子对你说,你不信。教我对你说,要你现生就要了生脱死,永离世间一切苦,常享极乐一切乐。

Because you believe me, [you are] with me as [your] teacher. [As what] your son to you said, you [did] not believe, [he] urged me [to], to you speak, wanting you [to, in this] present life, to go towards liberation [from the cycle of] birth [and] death, [to] forever depart [from this] world’s all suffering, [and to] constantly enjoy [the Land Of] Ultimate Bliss’ all joys.

汝要知好歹。我如此与你说,你要不听,还照自己愚痴心相,即为忘恩负义。不要说辜负了佛的度众生恩,并辜负了我这一番不惜精神与汝说这许多话的苦心了。

You must know [what is] good [and] bad. [With] me, like this with you speaking, [if] you [do] not listen, still according [with your] own ignorant mind’s forms, [this] then is [to] forget kindness [and] betray righteousness. Not speaking [of] letting down [the] Buddha’s delivering [of] sentient beings’ kindness, moreover letting down my this once unsparing energy, with you speaking these many words’ painstaking mind.

[Note 5: Only those whose teachings accord with the Buddha’s sūtra teachings (经教) can be trusted. If there are teachings, even if painstakingly taught, but not according with the Buddha’s sūtra teachings, they still cannot be trusted.]

你要发起决定求生西方心,又要教儿女媳妇孙子及亲戚朋友,同皆发决定现生即生西方心。

You must give rise [to the] determined mind [to] seek birth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss (极乐世界), and] also must teach [your] sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, relatives and friends, [to] together all give rise [to the] mind determined [to, in this] present life, [be] immediately born [in the] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss].

[Note 6: Since we find the precious Pure Land teachings to be so beneficial, we should also share them with those we know enthusiastically, so as to benefit them too.]

则教人之功德,辅助自己修心之功德,临命终时,即蒙阿弥陀佛亲垂接引你登九品莲台之最上品矣。

Then [with the] meritorious virtues of teaching others, supporting [the] meritorious virtues of [your] own cultivating [of the] mind, when approaching [life’s] end, immediately receiving Āmítuófó’s personal approach [to] receive [and] guide you, [to] ascend [to the] highest grade of [the] Nine Grades’ lotus daises.

[Note 7: With self-benefitting and benefitting of others (自利利他), and even self-delivering and delivering of others (自度度他) using the Pure Land teachings, as this is expression of the Bodhi Mind (菩提心), there will be a High Grade of birth in Pure Land received.]

我若偏你,便是佛骗人。何以故,我乃依佛之意与汝说故。佛岂有骗人之理乎?

I, if cheating you, then is [the] Buddha cheating people. Why thus? I [am] thus relying on [the] meanings of [the] Buddha, with you speaking thus. How can [the] Buddha have that reason [for] cheating people?

[Note 8: To reiterate, those who teach according with the Buddha’s teachings cannot be those deceiving others, while those who do not teach according with the Buddha’s teachings are deceiving others, be it purposely, or deludedly, perhaps by sharing personal wrong views, or repeating others’ wrong views.]

汝宜尽舍从前之下劣知见心,则定规得生西方矣。

You should completely abandon that past lowly [and] inferior understanding’s mind, [to] then definitely attain birth [in the] Western [Pure Land].
