[38]《普贤行愿品》的要义是什么?
[38] What Is [The] Essential Meaning [Of] Universal Virtue’s Practices [And] Vows’ Chapter?
◎ 华藏世界海,净土无量无边。而必以求生西方,为圆满佛果之行。可知念佛求生西方一法,原自肇起《华严》。
◎ [Summary]: [The] Flower Treasury World’s Ocean’s Pure Land [is] immeasurable [and] boundless. Yet [there] must [be] with seeking birth [in the] Western [Pure Land], for perfecting practices of [the] Buddha fruit. [It] can [be] known [that] mindfulness [of] Buddha [to] seek birth [in the] Western [Pure Land, this] one method, originally began from [the] Flower Adornment [Sūtra]《华严经》.
及至末会《入法界品》,善财以十信后心,受文殊教,遍参知识。
Up until [the] end [of the] assembly’s Entry [Into The] Dharma Realm Chapter, Good Wealth [i.e. Sudhana] with [the] Ten Faiths’ mind after, received Mañjuśrī’s teachings, [and] everywhere visited [good-]knowing [friends].
最初于德云比丘处,闻念佛法门,即证初住,是为法身大士。自此遍参诸知识,各有所证。
First at Virtue Cloud Bhikṣu’s place, hearing [the] Mindfulness [Of] Buddha Dharma Door, [he] immediately realised [the] First Abode, [to] be as [a] Dharma Body’s Great Being [i.e. Bodhisattva Mahāsattva (菩萨摩诃萨)]. From all these everywhere visited [good-]knowing [friends], each having that realised.
末至普贤菩萨处,蒙普贤开示,及威神加被之力,所证与普贤等,与诸佛等,是为等觉菩萨。
Finally arriving [at] Universal Virtue Bodhisattva’s place, receiving Universal Virtue’s teachings, and [his] majestic power of blessings, [with] that realised with Universal Virtue equal, [and] with all Buddhas equal, [to] be as [an] Equal Awakening Bodhisattva.
普贤乃为说偈,称赞如来胜妙功德,劝进善财,及与华藏海众,同以《十大愿王》功德,一致进行。
Universal Virtue [Bodhisattva] thus for [him] spoke verses, [to] praise [the] Thus Come [One’s] wonderful meritorious virtues, [and] encourage [the] advancement [of] Good Wealth, and with [the] Flower Treasury’s Ocean’s assembly, [to] together with [the] Ten Great Vows’ King‘s meritorious virtues, identically advance [in] practice.
回向往生西方极乐世界,以期圆满佛果。并不一说弥陀誓愿,净土庄严,往生因果。以此诸大士咸皆备知,无庸复说。
Dedicating [for] rebirth [in the] Western [Pure Land Of] Ultimate Bliss, with hope [of] perfecting [the] Buddha fruit. Not at all once speaking [of Ā]mítuó[fó’s] vows, [his] Pure Land’s adornments, [and] rebirth’s cause [and] effect. With this, [as] all Great [Bodhi]sattvas all already know [thus], without need [to] again speak [of them].
又《华严》一经,初译于晋,只六十卷。次译于唐则天朝,八十卷。二译皆文来未尽,于普贤说偈赞佛后未结而终。
Also, [the] Flower Adornment, [this] one sūtra, [that was] first translated in [the] Jìn [Dynasty], only [had] sixty scrolls. [The] second translated in Táng’s Zétiān Dynasty [had] eighty scrolls. [The] two translations [were] all [with] text [that] came incomplete, at [where] Universal Virtue spoke verses [to] praise [the] Buddha after, not concluded yet ended.
(从前无纸,西域之经,皆写于贝多树叶。以写之不易,或有节略。又叶用绳穿,或有散失。文未来尽,由此之故。若今经书钉作一本,则无此弊。)
(In the past, without paper, the sūtras of the Western Regions, were all written on patra tree leaves. With writing them not easy, perhaps having abridgement. Also, as the leaves used strings to be threaded together, perhaps having those scattered and lost. Text not coming completely, is due to this reason. If now, with sūtra books sewn together, made as individual books, they are then without this disadvantage.)
至德宗贞元十一年,南天竺乌荼国王,进呈《大方广佛华严经·入不思议解脱境界普贤行愿品》四十卷之全文。
Arriving [at Emperor] Dézōng Zhēnyuán’s eleventh year, Southern India’s Udra Kingdom’s King, offered [the] Great Right [And] Vast Buddha’s Flower Adornment Sūtra’s Entry [Into The] Inconceivable Liberation’s Realm [Of] Universal Virtue’s Practices [And] Vows’ Chapter‘s complete text of [the] fortieth scroll.
前三十九卷,即八十卷《华严》之《入法界品》,而文义加详。
[The] previous thirty-nine scrolls, [are] thus [the] eighty scrolls of Flower Adornment’s Entry [Into The] Dharma Realm Chapter, and [with the] text’s meanings’ additional details.
第四十卷之全文。为晋唐二译所无者,乃普贤称赞佛功德后,劝进往生西方之文。
[The] complete text of [the] fortieth scroll, is that [the] Jìn [and] Táng [Dynasties’] two translations [are] without. Thus [with that] after Universal Virtue’s praises [of the] Buddha’s meritorious virtues, [the] text of encouraging advancement [to be] reborn [in the] Western [Pure Land].
当时清凉国师亦预译场,八十卷经,早已亲制疏钞流通矣。物为此一卷经,制别行疏。
At that time, [the] State Preceptor [i.e. National Teacher] Qīngliáng also participated [in the] translation court, [with the] eighty scrolls’ sūtra, long ago already personally created [a] commentary [for] distribution. Other people for this one scroll’s sūtra, created separate commentaries.
圭峰造钞,为之弘阐。又为此四十卷全经制疏。
[Great Master] Guīfēng [圭峰大师] created collected writings, [and] for it greatly explained. Also, for this forty scrolls’ complete sūtra, [he] created [a] commentary.
以屡经沧桑,致久佚失。近由东瀛复回中国,故知此一卷经,为《华严》一经之归宿。
Because of frequently going through great changes, leading [it] to be long lost. Recently, from [the] East China Sea [i.e. Japan (日本)], again returning [to] China, thus knowing this one scroll’s sūtra, [to] be [the] Flower Adornment, [this] one sūtra’s that final destination.
华藏世界海,净土无量无边。而必以求生西方,为圆满佛果之行。
[The] Flower Treasury World’s Ocean’s Pure Land [is] immeasurable [and] boundless. Yet [there] must [be] with seeking birth [in the] Western [Pure Land], for perfecting practices of [the] Buddha fruit.
可知念佛求生西方一法,原自肇起《华严》。
[It] can [be] known [that] mindfulness [of] Buddha [to] seek birth [in the] Western [Pure Land, this] one method, originally began from [the] Flower Adornment [Sūtra]《华严经》.
