[37] Top Ten Lessons On Impermanence
[1] Departure: Impermanence (无常) is about ongoing ageing (老), toward more sicknesses (病), and eventually death (死). In this sense, it might seem ‘depressing’.
[2] Renewal: Impermanence is not just about decay, as it is also about renewal and rebirth (轮回), as its other side. In this sense, it might seem ‘uplifting’.
[3] Neutrality: Impermanence is not ‘neutral’ with that cyclically and equally ‘depressing’ and ‘uplifting’, as its experiences follow the kinds of karmas (业) created.
[4] Retrogression: Beyond that physical, impermanence is about spiritual progression and retrogression (backsliding) too, from moment to moment, and life to life. Due to lapses in mindfulness, spiritual progress is seldom linear, while there is only non-retrogressible (不退转) progress in Pure Land (净土).
[5] Direction: Impermanence should always be directed purposefully and diligently in the right direction, by spiritually transforming to be ever better in thought, word and deed, to become the best possible, with the greatest compassion (慈悲) and wisdom (智慧). Who does not keep progressing usually soon retrogresses.
[6] Transcendence: Impermanence is not just about that in this present life, with that in future lives subject to change too, if rebirth is yet to be transcended. Impermanence is about present blessings exhausting in this present life and future lives too, if indulgent and complacent now and later.
[7] Degeneration: Impermanence is about the Right Dharma’s (正法) presence in this Dharma-Ending Age (末法时期) ‘dissipating’, thus needing to reach Pure Land.
[8] Focus: Impermanence is a reminder to stay focused, to keep making the changes needed, while distracting aspects of life keep changing around us.
[9] Urgency: Impermanence is a reminder to change in time, due to the brevity and unpredictability of this life.
[10] Permanence: Impermanence is a reminder to take refuge in unchanging Buddha-nature (佛性), and to cultivate for realising the permanent bliss of purity (常乐我净), Buddhahood (佛果) itself.
