[278] The Path Of Fulfilling Great Filiality Within Buddhism

Only we, Śā[kyamuni Buddha’s] disciples, [are] with accomplishing [the] path [to] benefit beings as [the] supreme practice of repaying kindness.

Moreover, not only repaying [the] fathers [and] mothers of many lives, [there] also should [be] repaying [of] all fathers [and] mothers [from] immeasurable kalpas since, [with the] four [types of] births within [the] six paths.

[Note 1: Four types of births (四生): (i) womb birth (胎生), (ii) egg birth (卵生), (iii) moisture birth (濕生), (iv) manifested birth (化生).]

[Note 2: Six paths (六道): (i) hell path (地狱道), (ii) hungry ghost path (饿鬼道), (iii) animal path (畜生道), (iv) human path (人道), (v) asura path (阿修罗道), (vi) heavenly path (天道).]

Not only for fathers [and] mothers, while living then, should [there be] filial respect, moreover, [there] should [be] delivering [and] liberating of [the] spiritual consciousnesses [of] fathers [and] mothers, [to] enable them [to] exit suffering’s wheel, [and to] constantly abide [in] Right Awakening. Thus saying that filiality of [the] Śā[kya] clan, [is] obscure and difficult [to be] obvious.

Even so, [the] filiality of Confucianism, [is] with that attending [to and] supporting [of] fathers [and] mothers as foremost. If [the] Śā[kya] clan [has] taking leave [of] parents [for] leaving [the] house[hold life], how can [it], in the end, not look after [the] supporting of fathers [and] mothers?

That [the] Buddha regulated, [is that those] leaving [the] house[hold life] must report to [their] fathers [and] mothers [first. Even] if [there] are brothers, [sisters], children, nephews [and nieces who] can [be] relied on, [there] also must [be] reporting [to] ask [for permission] from [their] parents. [With their] parents’ consent, then can [they] leave [the] house[hold life]. Otherwise, [they are] not allowed [to] shave [and] drop [their hair].

[There] are those after leaving [the] house[hold life, with] brothers [and sisters] perhaps deceased, [with] parents without [anyone] to rely upon, also obtaining less [from] their provisions of robe [and] alms bowl, with [the rest for] presenting [to their] two parents.

Therefore, Chánglú had virtuous traces of supporting [his] mother.

([The] Sòng [Dynasty’s] Chánglú’s Chán Master Zōngyí [was a] Xiāngyáng person. [When] young orphaned, [by his] mother Chén Shì brought up at [his] maternal uncle’s home. Growing up, extensively proficient [in the] world’s classics, [at] twenty-nine years old leaving [the] house[hold life, with] deep understanding [of the] essential teachings. Later dwelling [at] Chánglú Monastery, [he] received [his] mother at [the] Abbot’s eastern abode, encouraging [and] leading [her to be] mindful [of the] Buddha[‘s name] [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)] [to] seek birth [in his] Pure Land. Passing through seven years, his mother [with] mindfulness [of] Buddha then departed. [On this] matter, see ‘Record [Of] Pure Land’s Noble Sages’)

Dàopī had unusual miracles [of] burying [his] father.

(Dàopī, [from the] Táng royal clan, [was a] Cháng’ān person. [When] born, just [at] one year [old, his] father died [during a] royal matter. [At] seven years old, [he] left [the] house[hold life. At the] age [of] nineteen, [with the] world chaotic [and] grain expensive, [he] carried [his] mother [to] enter Huàshān [i.e. Mount Huà], personally abstaining [from] grain, begging [for] food [to] present [his] mother. [In the] next year, [he] went towards Huòshān’s [i.e. Mount Huò] battlefield, [to] collect [and] gather white bones, [and] devotedly recited sūtras [and] mantras, praying [to] obtain [his] father’s bones. Several days [later, his] father’s bones from [the] bones gathered within jumped out, directly going, [to] distinguish [themselves] before [him]. Thus burying [the] other bones, [he] carried his father’s bones and returned [to] bury [them. On this] matter, see ‘Sòng [Dynasty’s] High Monastics’ Biographies’)

[Thus does a] sūtra say, ‘Making offerings [to one’s] father [and] mother’s meritorious virtues, with making offerings [to a] One Lifetime [To] Replacement Position’s Bodhisattva’s meritorious virtues [are] equal.’

[If your] parents [are] living, then skilfully encourage [and] instruct, [to] lead them [to] uphold veg[etari]an fasting, [and] mindfulness [of the] Buddha[‘s name to] seek birth [in his] Western [Pure Land Of Ultimate Bliss] [西方极乐世界].

[If your] parents [are] deceased, then with one’s studying [and] reciting [of sūtras and the Buddha’s name’s] practices’ meritorious virtues, often sincerely for [your] parents dedicate [them].

Leading them [to] forever exit [from the] five defilements, [to bid] long farewell [from the] six realms. [With] forbearance [that has] realised non-birth, [and] ground [that has] ascended [to] non-retrogression [in Pure Land].

[Note 3: Six realms (六趣): Also called the six paths (六道): (i) hell path (地狱道), (ii) hungry ghost path (饿鬼道), (iii) animal path (畜生道), (iv) human path (人道), (v) asura path (阿修罗道), (vi) heavenly path (天道).]

[Note 4: Five defilements (五浊): (i) kalpa’s defilement (劫浊), (ii) views’ defilement (见浊), (iii) afflictions’ defilement (烦恼浊), (iv) sentient beings’ defilement (众生浊), (v) lifespans’ defilement (命浊).]

[To the] utmost [of the] future period, with deliverance [and] liberation [of] sentient beings, instruction [of] oneself [and] others, [with all] together accomplishing awakening’s path.

Thus, then is [the] great filiality that [is] not with [the] world common.
