[258] [With] Stillness [And] Illumination Not Two, [The] Absolute [And] Conventional [In] Perfect Harmony
[On the] meanings of ‘[with] stillness [and] illumination not two, [the] absolute [and] conventional [in] perfect harmony’, [that the] below text [has] exceedingly brought out [with] clear expressions, why not personally experience [to] know, in order to understand [them]? Now, first with [the] meanings of these four words [i.e. stillness (寂) and illumination (照), absolute (真) and conventional (俗)] explained, then naturally [with] might like splitting bamboo, [with] one understood, together understood.
[The] above says, ‘[The] path that my mind originally possesses, with [the] Dharma of my mind inherently existing, originally are “[with] stillness [and] illumination not two, [with the] absolute [and] conventional [in] perfect harmony.”’
What [is] named as ‘stillness’? [It is] thus my mind’s essence that [is] not arising [and] not ceasing. [If] having arising [and] ceasing, [it is] then not named [as] stillness.
What [is] named as ‘illumination’? [It is] thus my mind’s forms that [are] understood clearly [and] constantly known. [If] not understood clearly [and] constantly known, [it is] then not named [as] illumination.
What [is] named as ‘absolute’? [It is] thus [the] mind’s essence that [is] constantly still [and] constantly illuminating, originally is true emptiness without forms, [with] one dharma not established.
What [is] named as ‘conventional’? [The] conventional is the same as [the] meaning [of the] false, called although then [with] one dharma not established, yet again [with the] ten thousand dharmas together complete, [and the] ten thousand virtues perfectly manifesting.
([The] ten thousand dharmas [and the] ten thousand virtues are the same as practices’ forms, [with] practices thus named [as the] conventional)
‘Stillness’ is the same as [the] essence, [and] ‘illumination’ is the same as forms [and] appearances with powers [and] functions of [the] essence only. These essence, forms [and] functions, [these] three, originally are one dharma. Possessing these three meanings, thus saying, ‘[with] stillness [and] illumination not two.’
[The] ‘absolute’ is the same as principles’ nature, [and the] ‘conventional’ is the same as practices’ cultivation. This principles’ nature originally possesses [the] path of practices’ cultivation, [and] these practices’ cultivation then manifest [the] virtues of principles’ nature (so-called ‘[with the] entire nature giving rise [to] cultivation, entire cultivation in [the] nature’), thus saying, ‘[the] absolute [and] conventional [in] perfect harmony’.
To continue, ‘[with] departure [from] thoughts [and] departure [from] passions, not arising [and] not ceasing’. This [is] called [the] essence [and] forms, [with] principles [and] practices, of stillness [and] illumination, [with the] absolute [and] conventional, all ‘[with] departure [from] thoughts [and] departure [from] passions, not arising [and] not ceasing.’
Detailedly contemplating [these] explanations completely, also [with] that segmenting of [these] several lines, naturally can [there be] understanding clearly in [the] mind. If still not understanding, [this] then is [with the] past lacking practice.
However, [with] sincere [and] earnest upholding [of the] Buddha’s name [i.e. Āmítuófó (阿弥陀佛)], waiting [for] karmic obstacles [to] once [be] eliminated, then [with] clarity like looking at fire, [there] will be [the] one day of looking at one another, then laughing.
