[280] With Complete Reading Of The Great And Small Vehicles’ Sūtras, Thereupon Not Slandering The Buddha And Refuting His Teachings

[The] world’s people [who have] yet [to] study [the] Buddhist sūtras, not knowing [the] Buddha’s profound plans [and] far-[reaching] considerations of aiding [the] world [and] delivering beings, seeing Hán[yù] [韩愈], Ōu[yáng Xiū] [欧阳修], Chéng Hào [程颢], Zhū [Xī] [朱熹] [and] others refuting Buddhism, then with honouring [the] ‘right’ [and] refuting [the] ‘evil’ as [their] own responsibility, then [with that] others said also said, indulged [in] verbal slander.

[Note 1: Those listed were scholars connected to Neo-Confucianism (Sòng-Míng School Of Principles: 宋明理学).]

不知韩、欧绝未看过佛经。韩之《原道》,只「寂灭」二字,是佛法中话,其余皆《老子》《庄子》中话。后由大颠禅师启迪,遂不谤佛。

Not knowing Hán [and] Ōu [have] absolutely yet [to] see [the] Buddhist sūtras before. Hán’s that ‘Original Path’, [is] only [with] ‘stillness [and] cessation’, [these] two words, [that] are words within [the] Buddha’s teachings, [with] those others all [being] words within ‘Lǎozǐ’ [and] ‘Zhuāngzǐ’s’ [texts]. Later, due [to] Chán Master Dàdiān’s ‘enlightening’, [he] thereupon [did] not slander [the] Buddha.

Ōu then [was] only [with] Hán, [who] was [his grand]master, [as] his basis of refuting Buddhism. With [the] King’s governance deteriorating, then [with the] path of benevolence [and] righteousness, without people promoting [them], thus [did] Buddhism take advantage of [the] opportunity [to] then enter.

If enabled [to] know that before stated, [the] path of [the] Buddha [for] following [and] complying [with] capacities suitable, [for] aiding [the] world [and] delivering beings, [he] will not go so far, [to be] with Buddhism as China’s disaster, then desiring [to] drive it [out]. Ōu [was] with this promoted. Those learning with Ōu as [their] grandmaster, [were] all with refuting [of] Buddhism. [They] were then [with] this imitated.

Wise Teachings’ Great Master [i.e. Chán Master Qìsōng (契嵩禅师)] [who] desired [to] save [those with] this malady, composed ‘Complementary Teachings’ Compilation’, [and] offered [it to] Emperor Rénzōng.

Rénzōng taught [it to] Duke Wèi [of] Hán, [and] Hán held [and] used [it to] teach Ōu. Ōu [was] surprised [and] said, ‘Not aware [that] monastics within has this person, [at] dawn, [I] will [at] once see him.’

[The] next day, Hán accompanied Wise Teachings’ Great Master [to] go see [him, and they] talked freely [till the] end [of the] day. From this [onwards], not again [did he] refute Buddhism. [Of the] scholars under [his] school, [who] received teachings of Wise Teachings’ [Great Master], many all did [their] utmost [to] learn Buddhism.

Chéng [and] Zhū studied [the] Buddhist Great Vehicle’s sūtras, got close to [the] Chán Tradition’s good-knowing friends, [and] attained understanding [of the] meanings of ‘Entire practices are the same as [the] principles’ within [the] sūtras, and [the] Chán Door’s ‘[With] Dharma [Door after] Dharma [Door], each [and every] one [is] able to return [to] one’s mind’, then assumed [this] as great attainment. [They had] truly yet [to] completely read [the] Great [and] Small Vehicles’ sūtras, and get close to each tradition’s good-knowing friends.

Thereupon, attaching [to] principles [and] abandoning practices, [with] denial [thinking there is] no cause [and] effect, saying, ‘[The] Buddha’s those spoken three periods’ causes [and] effects, [and the] six paths’ rebirths, [are] thus [the] basis [for] deceiving foolish men [and] foolish women, [to] believe those teachings, [it is] truly without these matters.’ Moreover saying, ‘[When a] person dies, [with the] form already rotted [and] destroyed, [and the] consciousness also drifted [and] scattered, even if [there] is filing, cutting, pounding [and] grinding [i.e. in hell], where will [these be] executed? [With the] consciousness already scattered, who [is] led [to be] reborn?’ Due [to] this, those evil [will with] ease [in their] minds create [evil] karmas, [and] those good [will] also [be] difficult [to have] self-encouragement.

[Note 2: Six paths (六道): (i) hell path (地狱道), (ii) hungry ghost path (饿鬼道), (iii) animal path (畜生道), (iv) human path (人道), (v) asura path (阿修罗道), (vi) heavenly path (天道).]
